What's Love Got To Do With It?

Got some feedback from Anonymous on a few stories recently, and they liked them, except they thought they would have been better had there been more love between the characters.

This took me aback a bit, as love's not something I think a lot about when I write porn. I very often fall in love with my characters, and sometimes my characters fall in love with other characters, but it's not a big prioroty with me; it's not something i aim for. In fact, I think love and affection often ruin the erotic tension of a story for me. I find "loving couples" stories invariably less arousing than other categories unless they involve some real deviance or some other form of emotional tension.

I don't know where I'm going with this. I guess I don't know exactly how to understand what Anonymous said. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? On just where love fits into erotica?

It's all just a matter of taste. Where do mini skirts fit into erotica? Some people like details about what people are wearing, others prefer to let their imagination supply the extras. Love is no different. Don't write it if you think it kills a story. Or take it as a challenge and work it in.

As for love, personally I think it can work easily. When you're in love you are a hell of alot more willing to try something crazy for you lover.

Perhaps it's just in the fact that your characters haven't 'teased' each other... Think on it next time one character takes the other to mouth and then (because the mouth is otherwise occupied) makes direct eye contact and winks... ;)

Love is about giving. Porn is often about receiving.

Well as long as the characters seem to connect in some way (and not just in a physical sense!) thats enough for me,I don't think your characters NEED to be in love to make erotica good. Saying that i think most of the characters in my stories are in love.

I suppose it depends on a persons view on sex, some people prefer a mills and boon kind of romanxce fel to a story, star crossed lovers and all that jazz and others are open to non loving relationship sex.

I don't think the love aspect makes a difference in how good an erotic story is (As long as the sex is hot anyway!) generally, ijust think its a personal preference thing and Dr M you shouldn't take it too much to heart love, unless you get lots of similar comments it's just one persons view.

Whatever turns you on ...

Anonymous feedback that complains that you haven't put "x" in the story is just a statement that you haven't met their particular turn-on.

For some it is love; for some it is pussy; for many (apparently) it is incest.

Just ignore it as you ignore the abusive feedback and continue to write your stories in a way that is valid for you.

Hmmm, Anonymous always tells me I have too much love and not enough sex. That guy is never satisfied.;)

Ahh.

Anonymous's profile is starting to take shape.

He/she/it vacillates and redacts his/hers/its e-mails free of nasty words prior to sending.

No, I'm sorry if you got the wrong impression. I'm the one who edited out the ... indelicacies. I refuse to write anything which is in questionable taste.

You're really complicating our investigation here, MG.

Pssst ... but go ahead ... tell us the dirty words. You're allowed. Laurel said it's okay. Trust me.

From past experience.....

If you want to get a lot more feedback from women, just sprinkle the word "love" a little more liberally in a story. But be prepared to get a rash of "Your story really sucked....what happened?" From a number of men who the last thing they wanted to read was an "I love you" sandwiched within the "sandwich" they were expecting to be reading about......

I remain,

IMHO, I don't necessarily agree that "love" or "I love you" adds to the female vote as much as feeling like you have been mentally seduced. I personally prefer to read stories that seduce my mind, stories of passion, words that stir the libido (hubby knows I've been reading again, LOL). Just my thoughts.

Sheesh, such cynicism. ;)

But I don't know if I can agree with you here about the preferences being determined by gender. I write the most romantic drivel immaginable and most of my positive email is from men-- and no, not just gay ones.

My theory is that there is some nefarious group of rabble rousers who are trying to undermine the entire porn writing community by sending emails telling us they want more sex, less sex, lots of love, no love, always changing their minds as soon as we give in, demanding more and more until our heads explode and we die.

*shrugs*

Or it could just be personal preference.
