What's in a vote

I have a question for other authors: I tend to write "series" stories and while I expect readership to fall in subsequent chapters and find it gratifying to write to a core group of 9 or 10 thousand, I do wonder about the "Voting Scores." I would be interested in what other writers typically gauge as a score of well received work. My votes for different series and chapters range from a low of 4.2 to a high of 4.7. I understand that some would ask, "what are you asking for that is a good range?" but still it seems there is some significance to the 4.5 or above mark. Any insight or opinions are appreciated. Thanks

Certain topics, preferences, and individual authors are habitually targeted by zappers "just because." And one "1" vote pulls eight "5" votes down from 4.5 hot. So, if these authors just keep on writing and posting regardless of the rating, they are winners.

Beyond that, I think anything that can stay above a 4.0 resonates with enough readers to be considered a good story (at least by those readers).

As far as really well-written, noncliched stories, I'd be willing to bet you'll find most of those in the 4.0 to 4.5 range. The five-happy bunch look for something meeting their expectations, and for most that's quick sexual gratification in well-worked channels. The better-constructed stories tend to be targeted more by the vengeful--and probably don't get a comparitively high readership. At least in my observation. When I've been pointed to a really, really good story, it invariable falls in the 4.0 to 4.5 rating zone.

I don't pay much attention to scores, although I am happy if a story stays above 4.5

The ratio of votes to reads is so far out of balance, it is meaningless. I have on story with a score of 4.76. That is from 169 votes out of 35852 people who click ed on the page. With that number of votes, it's simply too easy to manipulate, up or down.

I prefer comments. There is a lot more to be learned from a person who takes the time to actually write something.

I'm happy if mine are over 3.75 at least in the loving wives category. My sci-fi seems to do well, most are over 4.5. I can honestly say that none of mine are lower than 3.9 as of a week ago when I last looked. Now with that said, I'm sure there are those who read this will make sure they aren't anymore and call me a liar.
