New York (CNN)The first sign something was wrong: The police sergeant didn't show up for morning roll call.

New York Police Department officials went to his home, where they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It was July 27, and the 30-year-old with eight years on the force was the NYPD's seventh suicide this year, according to officials.

It's news that rattled Police Commissioner James O'Neill, who says his biggest fear is another one of his officers is about to take his or her own life.

"Am I scared? I've got to be honest with you. Yeah, I am," O'Neill told CNN during a recent interview at his office at One Police Plaza in Manhattan. "Maybe there's somebody out there right now that's in crisis or approaching crisis and just unable or unwilling to come forward."

Over a two-month period, O'Neill has had often-painful conversations about a member of the department who killed himself. The number of NYPD suicides so far this year stands at seven -- with five of those occurring since June.

One of the consequences of stigmatizing mental health in the country and among specific occupations. People are afraid to reach out for the help they need.

I suspect that Matty might be a bit more right than yossi.

Because coincidentally, I came across an article on RT discussing the recent spike in suicides among French policemen. (not linking the article cause foreign agency)

One French police officer commits suicide every four days
https://www.thelocal.fr/20190409/it...olice-officer-commits-suicide-every-four-days

According to rt they are overworked and are facing a lot of blame and accountability from the public, when they either miss a terrorist attack or when they kill innocents by mistake.

Add to that the Yellow Vests demonstrations this year:

Michel Thooris, secretary general of Policiers en colère:

“The government uses the national police force for political ends. They refuse to respond to the political demands of the Yellow Vests. They use the police simply as a tool with which to postpone a political deadline.”

And the demonstrators project their anger on Police, just like they tried to villify American border agents.

Words hurt wimpy douchebags.

His intent might have been racist, but I think he's right.

Because 90% of the posts about policemen or border patrol agents, in this forum or online are full of blame. Based on a few racist bad apples who killed unarmed Black men.
So I suspect that they're now facing more blame shifting and bullying from their own superiors, who want to cover their backs.

I saw in Jafo's article that firefighters in America have a high suicide rate too.
There was a huge scandal a while back about the suicides and bullying culture in Victoria's Fire Services, employees banned together to bring the matter to court.
So in such jobs I think it's the risk of losing your life or being injured, And the workplace and public blame culture.

It goes deeper than that.

In some jobs you risk everything. Yet, you know that someone has your back. Then, you find out that's not true and they've been scamming you all along by telling you that. That point usually comes when you need their support and it's not there. So you're left swinging in the breeze to face what's coming down by yourself.

Where did Matt go? Says he loves spam. He said if he ever got banned he wouldn’t be back.

Taking bets.

Anyone?

Good point.

I enjoy a lot your posts. I think that you and Lance have a specific insight into human nature that the rest of us lack, possibly because of your type of work. And then there's IR with her philosophical mindedness, and AJ and belly who are great about ideologies, the obvious artists or writers and so on.
It's a nice array of different skills, people complement each other.

Ahh, so you're a moron.

Gotcha'.

I'm not referring to Lance's trolling.
You obviously haven't been consistently reading his posts. Because in neutral discussions (unrelated to politics or forum members), he often comes up with surprising insights.

Coming back to the topic at hand.
I've seen workplace bullying in action, so I'm obviously skewed towards that.

And even with the Starbucks case, what did they do?
They promptly wrote that they fired the rude employee and gave 'sensitivity training' to the rest. But wait a minute. Racism was clearly a factor, but maybe Starbucks employees are acting in that way and projecting on more vulnerable customers their own frustrations with the inside culture.

Or when things go wrong a chemical spill by some huge corporation, what do they do? They blame some low level employee, fire him as if it has nothing to do with them.

I suspect that the epidemy of Police suicides in the US and France are a bit in that line.

What do you make of the NYPD suicides?

Suicides of Police Officers, as well as divorce, alcoholism, spousal abuse and some other "aberrant" behaviors unfortunately occur at significantly higher rates than in most other professions.
It is truly sad. :(

Officer suicides have been on the rise nationwide now for some years. The highest rates of suicide increase have been in NY and CA.

It's a job that i would not want, these days. I respect and honor those Men and Women that protect us. :rose:

Chicago Police also have it bad off.:(

And Baltimore's PD is like - 68% short of required staffing levels, and they're about 800 street cops short these days. Sad. And the city in on par to beat their last record of over 300 homicides. gotta love it.

Talk Radio, Tristyn and some other clown or two also love spam. Maybe your Matty has a hidden side.
