What's English cooking like these days?

In this 1945 essay, George Orwell writes that there is such thing as good English cooking (as distinct from food from other cultures prepared/sold/served in England), but the rest of the world doesn't know that, because you can't get good English cooking in a restaurant in England, only in a private home. Is that still true?

I tried steak-and-kidney pie at a British-themed pub in Florida once, BTW. The existence of such a dish does not speak well of England; I was still tasting it the next day, and not in any good way. Cornish pasties are good, though.

When I was over-by-there it was at the height of the mad cow. It was hard to know what to eat so I survived primarily on fish and chips.

...and beer.
