I was reading about Joe, making his peace with Apac.
Here

The Israeli Commandos vs Turks?

I imagine the guy that got thrown overboard will never live it down.:D

The thing that Biden sidesteps is, the raid was in international waters, so Israel is on thin ice. If they had intercepted them in Territorial Waters, they would have had a better chance in the court of public opinion.

but Joe is doin' the Masta's bidness, for that is what the Vice is all about.

It has interesting "turnabout" to it. When the Jews were using every bucket they could find after WWII to try to get settlers across the Med to what was then the British Palestine Administration, The British reasoned they had to intercept them in international waters to maintain a defendable international law case for boarding and seizing. Obviously they got away with it because they continued doing it until they were pushed out adminstering Palestine.

I think the Israelis stepped in it, thinking that 'mere civilians' would be no match for their commandos, and the terrorized protesters would probably "greet us with flowers".

Only after one of them had been tossed over the side the guns came out, apparently, and with 9 dead and 11 injured, and untold numbers of rounds fired it looks like the Israelis underestimated the situation.

I find it interesting that Biden is sent to mollify the Israel lobby, I presume, so Obama can 'remain a friend to our Muslim brothers'.

The ragheads backed off cuz they know Israel doesnt play nice like Obama. And Israel doesnt give a fuck what the Usual Suspects like; they intuitively sense that no one likes Jews regardless of what they do. They know Usual Suspects prefer lapdogs with fleas and mange.

I think they don't care if others perceive they've stepped in it. They don't give a fig what others think about such things.

(That's why I'm not too worried about the Iran nuclear stuff. While the rest of the world is "oh woe is meing" about it all and about what they can pressure Iran to stop doing, the Israelis at some point are going to sweep in and just knock all the facilities out--they done it more than once before--without caring what anyone else thinks about it.)

John Nance Gardner, FDR's Veep in his first two terms, once likened the office to "not worth a bucket of warm piss"...that comment was subsequently bowdlerized by the media of the time into "warm spit' for the easily offended. :D

The Israelis don't give a hoot what the UN or anybody else thinks about their defending themselves...they've been at war ever since the state of Israel came into being...and before that.

They have some of the most sophisticated weaponry in the world, either purchased or developed at home...and a highly trained standing and citizen reserve army...woe betide anyone who locks horns with them.

That's probably an accurate description of an outdated use of the office of vice president. That last few have been given considerably more responsibility. (e.g., the one before Biden ran the government whenever he chose to.)

Harry S Truman for one...he got to drop two atom bombs and wage war in Korea...he was considered a 'Garner-style' VP and virtually ignored because FDR was going to live forever...Surprise! :D

Not quite sure what you are suggesting. Truman did these things as president, not vice president.

(For what you seem to be saying, you can move that closer by a couple of presidents. LBJ was made vp to neutralize him. Then he did his own thing as president. Bush the Greater not so much. He was given responsibilities--mainly over intelligence--as vp and pretty much stuck to what he knew to do and was known to do when he was president.)

Gore, though (I think), was the first one to be given major public policy responsibilities as vp.

What's a Vice President for?

Most Presidential candidates pick a VP that has the where with all to bring in votes but no one wants to ever see as President. Lincoln should have took that into consideration, along with JFK. :D

Theodore Roosveldt was picked for precisely that reason but actually turned out to be exceptional after McKinley was killed. But I don't think another could be found to compare with him.

TE999 has already proposed Harry Truman, who, indeed, is currently being reassessed by historians in a lot better light than in decades past.

And for those who actually like to see rhetoric turned into action, LBJ got key social legislation passed that JFK only gave nice, nice lip service to.

Only because Lady Bird had her hand up his ass moving his lips. :D

Lady Bird, the prototype for Hillery.

I think you mistake Lady Bird (who concentrated pretty much on her Texas TV stations and gardens) with Barbara Bush. (Really.)

No, Congress knew all about JFK's skeletons-in-the-closet (or bedroom, more precisely) and flipped him off on said social legislation. That wouldn't work on LBJ because he was the most brutal politician on the Hill when he was there. So they all tucked their tails between their legs and passed what should have been done years before. Then the asshole decided he could do the same thing with the world at large. 50,000 sixties kids later . . .

Yeah and ...

... let's remember that most vital task; he presides over the senate and is the tie breaking vote if necessary.

No what? I don't see you saying anything I didn't say. JFK, as president, couldn't get the social legislation through. LBJ, when he became president didn't. The context of the post was responding to a statement that no vp succeeding a president had done something like this since TR succeeded McKinley. I was noting, at least two since TR have.

It's really irrelevant to the point why JFK didn't get the social legislation passed. (Although I do think it's also a point that JFK wasn't the liberal everyone thought he was after he was martyred.)

(Although I do think it's also a point that JFK wasn't the liberal everyone thought he was after he was martyred.)

Hell no, he wasn't. If my history remembrance is correct he managed a balanced budget, upped spending on the conventional arm, encouraged the Special Forces and was the coldest of cold warriors. And as far as Viet Nam was concerned, all LBJ did was take JFK's policies and enlarge them---in the stupidest possible manner!
