You know when you accidentally cut your fingernail or toenail down to the qwick? What is that? Why is it called a qwick? Is that even how you spell it?

Quick is one of my favorite words.

You can be quick.. Fast and immediate.
You can cut your quick.. any sensative or exposed core.
You can be wounded to the quick.. your vital core.
You can be the quick.. that's us, the living.
Or you can become quick.. knocked up that is.

The quick is where the nail attaches to the skin:

From dictionary.com:

".... the part of a finger or toe to which the nail is attached..."

Main Entry: 2quick
Function: noun
Date: before 12th century
1 quick plural : living beings
2 [probably of Scandinavian origin; akin to Old Norse kvika sensitive
flesh, from kvikr living] a : a painfully sensitive spot or area of flesh (as
that underlying a fingernail or toenail) b : the inmost sensibilities <hurt to
the quick by the remark> c : the very center of something : HEART
3 archaic : LIFE 11

I've never heard it used in either context before.

I've learned something new today!

Have you ever heard the phrase, "The quick and the dead"?

There are several meanings for the word quick... in fact one of them literally means "not dead" - i.e. - Alive - therefor "The Quick and the Dead" Means the living and the dead...

Main Entry: 1quick
Pronunciation: 'kwik
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English quik, from Old English cwic; akin to Old
Norse kvikr living, Latin vivus living, vivere to live, Greek bios, zOE
life
Date: before 12th century
1 : not dead : LIVING, ALIVE

It was the name of a Sharon Stone Western.. and it appears in the Bible on numerous occations. It's a common enough saying..

" The mistress which I serve quickens what's dead. --Shak."

you & Sharon Stone

y'know, this is the second reference to Sharon Stone you've made in just a week or so's time.

:)

It does seem like I would've come across that saying, but honestly I've never heard it. I am now enlightened.

I had three Sharon Stone references, including this one.
While I'm at it, I made ten Catwoman references and not a one was caught.. oh well.

The Apostles' Creed, of course

I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died, and was buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead .

I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body: And the Life everlasting. Amen.

Said every Sunday in church.
