What's a better lead up?

So I'm looking to start writing a father/daughter story and I can't decide on which of these is a better lead up into the actual story. Here's what I can't decide between:

Mom dies early in daughter's life, causing the daughter to grow extremely attached to her father over the course of her life.

OR

Mother leaves maybe 1-3 months prior to the start of the story so daughter tries to cheer up her dad only for it to lead to something much more enjoyable.

Both work and can lead to different stories for different emotional loss reasons.

My take

I would have the mom leave him and the adult daughter for another man so his motive for screw his daughter is get back at the wife .

The daughter feels abandon and know if she rejects her dad advances she all alone and depends on him for financial help.

But what happens when the mom wild affair flames out ?

It depends if you want to make the absent wife a hero or a villain, and the subsequent effects it will have on the father and daughter.

Either way the dad may fall in such a deep depression the girl gets to actually run the house. By the end the old guy comes back to the world of fully living, he founds out that he have a new wife at home, for any purpose but sex, played by his daughter.

Above probably works better with run-away mommy, as then they both have the additional closeness of being betrayed together and motive of internal revenge.

Oh, I like this. I don't know why I hadn't considered it! I'll write one, then I'll write an alternate version. Maybe with the same characters? I dunno. I just hope it doesn't suck lol, it'll be my first time writing a story. I don't really have an entire story thought out yet for either option yet, more or less just a start-off point and some buildup.

Oh, I like this. I don't know why I hadn't considered it! I'll write one, then I'll write an alternate version. Maybe with the same characters?

See where their tales could go, and take it there. You might want to rename the players so as not to confuse readers. I gender-flipped a story but changed names, just to be safe.

is the story meant to be incest or merely romance?

why not let mommy blow her brains out in front of them, when a do it at home dna kit shows the daughter isn't HIS, and he wants a divorce...

Half of the fairy tales out there have dead moms. It's an extremely common theme and it seems to work. If mom is dead rather than just moved out, then she's definitely out of the picture, which might make it more plausible or compelling, but if mom is still somewhat in the picture that could create interesting plot twists. You can go either way.

JMO, and take this with a salt lick (instead of a grain of salt) since IRL I have regular relations with a biological sibling an unofficially adopted one and two sisters. So I am not judging just observing. But jeez an awful lot of daddy-daughter stuff (not really my thing, but again not judging) focuses on the "supernatural justification" of the relationship. How fate just forced the two together.

Come on grow a pair. God created our beautiful bodies to be appealing to one another. Taboos exist because we find our corporeal beings to be so attractive, and because we intimately know and should truly love our siblings, parents etc. There are no cultural taboos against falling in love with a Radio Flyer, a Pontiac Aztek or any Nissan designed in California. Because that would just be unnatural. ;-)

Killing off mom or the girlfriend is Walt Disney or TV's Ponderossa territory. Poorly created relationships fail every day, or how about an alien abduction. Maybe Dad just being the top Criminal Defence Attorney in town, or an elected official a real big-shot. A real SOB who thinks his 18 y/o or even better his mildly estranged daughter raised by his ex-wife, that he still holds a torch for, and who just graduated from a top tier Law School , or Summa from Georgetown Poly Sci is all that and a bag of chips. He offers her the short track to being a partner by 30, or being Ambassator to the Court of Saint James at a carnal price.

Oedipus, Elektra, Trump, Phillips...

Of course lots of us girls have daddy issues so it may not even be unwelcome.
