What writing app(s) do you like?

I recently received an iPad mini. :) Naturally one of my first thoughts was "What is a good writing app?" I've been looking around and checking reviews, but was wondering which one anyone else out there might prefer?

I was really hoping that I could tell you "Scrivener" and maybe someday in the near future I can... but not quite yet.

That's okay. :) I have seen some, for example there's one called The Novel Writer, and many are free. I just can't decide if I want to go with one designed for writing stories, or just some kind of text editor. Of course if it's free I can just try it and delete if I don't like it.

Still, it's always good to hear from people with more direct experience.

I guess I'm behind the times. I use Word 2010 on my pc and my lap top, and a thumb drive to port the stories between the two. Get me my cane ya young whipper snapper!!!

LOL Oh I use Word, don't get me wrong. And right now I have a MacAir, which will probably be me primary writing spot. However, it'd be nice to have something on the iPad for when I'm in the car, or waiting on the kids, or whatever.

The closest I come to writing when I'm not home might be sending an idea for a line or something to my e-mail.

If you think that your MacAir is going to be your primary writing platform, then I highly suggest Scrivener. Then when it does come out for iOS, you are already familiar with it and are ready to add your mini as a secondary platform.

I really like Scrivener. I know this sounds backward, but it was the reason I bought a Mac.

I think the biggest downside to using Scrivener for me is that my editor uses MS Word. I can export from Scrivener to just about any format you can think of, so I'm able to get him the copy without issue. But I can't (that I know of) bring the edited document back into Scrivener and merge it with the original. I'm stuck managing versions after that, which I personally loathe.

The good far outweighs the bad, though. It is an excellent tool, in my opinion.

I have heard good things about Scrivener, although I have to say that at the moment I'm not sure I want to spend the money. But I shall investigate. For now I will probably go with one of the free apps. I'm guessing most people here haven't used them, so I'll just give it a shot.

I use Evernote, and it syncs between my MacbookAir, my iPad and my iPhone so I can always access my work wherever I am. You can organize notes into notebooks and notebooks into stacks, which is very useful for putting together complex stories.

I have Evernote but haven't used it. I'm also intrigued by one called Novel Writer.

No, I hadn't. I haven't done NaNo in a couple of years, but perhaps I should try. I didn't realize one could "win."

Is "winning" just hitting the 50k word mark? Or do they actually choose winners, as in a "best of" sense?

I've considered getting Dragon. Maybe I'll enter NaNo as well, especially since . . .

Winning is hitting the 50k mark.

I did 50k words in the last three weeks on my latest story alone.

I did NaNo last year for the first time. It was fun, but I only made it halfway through. Sick kids and some personal stuff got too distracting. But I'm definitely going to go for it again this year. I just have to come up with a story first ...

There could be different offers next time. But I think they're mentioned before NaNo starts.

Interesting. I recently started using Evernote to clip editing, writing, and other resource tips to. I'm not a writer, but do edit Lit stories. How is writing in EN, compared to writing in MS Word 2007+? I always save the stories I edit to a project folder I set up in Dropbox, another cloud-based app.
