Celebrity pastor Joel Osteen is drawing intense criticism online for keeping his megachurch closed during Hurricane Harvey and instead offering social media promises of prayers.

The “prosperity gospel” minister preaches at a 16,800-seat arena at Lakewood Church near downtown Houston, which has suffered severe flooding after the hurricane made landfall and then parked over the city.

Osteen offered prayers in a Saturday afternoon tweet, but his critics asked for more.
That fucking church was not even touched by the flood, but he closed his doors to people who needed a storm shelter.

He's got TWO mansions worth over $10 million, and a private jet.

Televangelists are utter fucking scammers.

Portions of the church building have flooded, so there's no good argument for using it. However, there will be a good argument over relief funding for flood damage, considering the church has paid no taxes.

And if he had opened the doors he would have been criticized for not leaving the rescuing to the professionals and/or encouraging travel through a treacherous city.

Has anyone else been criticized for such a thing?

What basis do you have for that assertion?

Rumors were flying, as thick as a mass of bats flying out of a cave, but it seems these simple statements are true.

Do as I say, not as I do
Joel Osteen was shamed into opening his megachurch.

Air mattresses have been purchased.

Twitter user Charles Clymer posted a picture of the roadway leading up to the church — which used to be the home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets — that showed all was high and dry Monday morning.

“Front of @JoelOsteen’s huge Lakewood Church in Houston at 11 am. Closed due to “flooding.” Person who took it asked to be anonymous,” Clymer said.

Nearly everyone was helping, but Joel Osteen (Masshole Coast Guards are bringing boats, ect. yay)

The cavernous building he converted into a church sheltered hurricaine victims before he bought it.

Sunday evening, Lakewood Church, Joel and Victoria Osteen all tweeted to raise money toward Samaritan's Purse, which is an organization that raises funds to help communities in natural disasters like Harvey, but no word on whether they would open the former Compac Center's doors.

The church, which was once Houston's Compac Center, can house more than 16,000 people at a single time.

Freelance reporter Ruth Graham also posted a thread on Twitter saying she had spoken to a Lakewood representative who said the church wouldn’t turn anyone away.

Representative also reportedly told Graham that the church wasn’t flooded but would be difficult for most people to access due to nearby flooding

snark tweet about Joel Osteen prayer offer and the usual shaking of the money pan with Mr. Graham

Houston's Joel Osteen has a net worth over $50m and a church that holds 16,800 but this is all he's offering...

(and a 10 million dollar house, safe on its own hill)

And especially considering these guys take in tons of money. He'll just ask his viewers for donations and probably get a lot more than he needs.

And if he had opened the doors he would have been criticized for not leaving the rescuing to the professionals and/or encouraging travel through a treacherous city.
Yeah, just like the many other places who've opened their doors around town for people to seek shelter.

Oh wait, they didn't, nevermind.

He's a Christian. They can do no right.

So then you can link to other Christian organizations that have come under fire for helping out?

Unless you're just adopting a persecution complex...?

I never check profiles. Can't remember looking at a single one, ever in all the time I've been here.

Oh, look, we have one of the church's adherents among us.
