In the U.S. Memorial day marks the start of "grilling" season (pretty much "it's summer!") where people fire up barbecues and start cooking and eating alfresco.

What will you be cooking over those open flames?

We don't celebrate our Dead until November, but the smell of various BBQs can be felt almost as soon as the sun comes out.
Sausages, for me.

We're already at the beach with about three thousand other people, and everyone's grilling. I swear I'm going to smell like charcoal and lighter fluid for a week.

So far, it's been various foil-wrapped meals I just toss on the grill, but tomorrow were going all out. BBQ chicken, beef franks, and hamburgers.

Then I get to drive us the three-hour drive home with a full belly. ;)

We were given a great BBQ grill a year or two ago. Haven't fired it up yet -- need to build a covered patio first. If that ever comes together, we'll probably grill... whatever.

If I was serious about this, we'd get a disco volante[/b], the "flying saucer" of north Mexican cuisine. Take a blade from a disc harvester, about 1 yard or meter diameter. Weld legs to it. Build a fire under it. Sear stuff atop it, sort of like a Mongolian BBQ. Yum.

If anyone's looking for me, I'm at a lovely table for one, overlooking the creek. I'm enjoying a perfect, medium-rare NY Strip with a hint of Montreal seasoning, a mixed green salad with cashews tossed in to make it interesting, and a very nice PA Lemberger.

My girlie is eating her hamburger in the camper.

It's grilling season year round for me. Last night was pork tenderloin, the night before was chicken breasts, and earlier in the week it was grilled Italian sausages for pasta sauce. Spare ribs are on the menu for tomorrow.

Is their baked beans involved? That could be along car ride.

I'm not grilling anything. It's my sisters turn to host the annual family get together.

Good thing. They called the cops on us last year at my house.

So what we were still grilling and cooking at 3am? And blasting music and playing badminton.....In the street

It was something out of a comedy when the cops show up. One asks, "Okay, who actually lives here?

15 people immediately point to me including my wife who is standing across the street on the neighbors lawn acting like she's not part of the whole mess.

I'm not sure we will be grilling tomorrow. There aren't any plans for a family get together and it seems a waste of energy to fire up an eight burner BBQ for two. Today I'm brazing short ribs in red sauce to serve with pasta and roast green beans that I'll top with toasted pine nuts, chopped sun-dried tomatoes and Parmesan cheese. Tomorrow? I dunno . . .

You're making me want to get the brats out early, Bear, just to compete. :D

Only one of my brats is here with me this weekend. The other two are with my parents.

Oh. You meant the kind that we had for lunch yesterday. Oops! :D

Yeah, those brats. :p

Although, there are quite a few of the other kind around, too (but not mine; she's a perfect angel, of course).

Chorizo

It just happens that Memorial Day 21 years ago I was very busy spitting out a bouncy baby boy. So in addition to the brats, steaks and chicken we will be having beer and birthday cake to celebrate his "Goodbye Bouncer, Hello Bartender Day."
