Planning a trip to Spain this August, any recommendations. Thanks!

Frommers' guide Book, barter a cabbie to show you around the outskirts, visit a winery, off the wall eateries, a beautiful city.

Mercado de San Miguel.

Be prepared to spend the whole day there, and go hungry. I swore I would not eat another bite again after my last visit.

Museum of the Americas was a good time.

Really brings home Spain's impact on the Americas.

Leave Madrid ASAP, it's probably the dullest capital in Europe.

Granada in the South where the Alhambra is arguably the most beautiful building in Europe, followed by Cordoba (the Mesquite) and Seville for the HQ of the Spanish inquisition.

In more Northerly Spain, Toledo and Salamanca are much more interesting than Madrid - in fact if you possibly can, fly into Barcelona rather than Madrid.

I've been to Madrid all of once years and years and years ago. I remember liking it but for the life of me I couldn't tell you why. Probably the men. Spanish men are...nice.

Just to Madrid, or other parts of Spain? I just returned from a week in Sevilla. HomeAway and AirBnB are excellent sites for finding very affordable apartments to rent for a weekend or a week.

We are going to Sevilla, Gibraltar, Granada and Cordoba as well. Unfortunately, no time left for Barcelona. How about hotels? do you not recommend them?

tactful anything to look for on the outskirts?

islandman we should be walking distance from Mercado de San Miguel. I hope we did not make the wrong decision by staying at the center!

XdOu™ I am sure we are going to have a lot of fun, thanks!

ishtat Alhambra at Granada and Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba already in order!

JackAssJim any particular reason to hang out in Rota other than sailors?

beetlebum sell it to me; culture, history, food, entertainment, flamenco...

Thanks to all

Sevilla, Granada and Cordoba will be wonderful. (but August!! - if you could go a bit later you would have a better time)

Gib is a bit odd. Not sure what made you decide to go there?

To see the Strait of Gibraltar I guess. We can't go later since we need to back home before Sept.

You can do the same thing in Tijuana Mexico.

Why waste the expense and time of traveling half way across the world?

Just book a flight to San Diego and rent a car.

When in Spain do not mention that you have been/are going to Gibraltar. It gets the Spanish annoyed.

Getting in and out of Gibraltar can be long-winded especially if the Spanish have been recently irritated by the UK.

You can see the Strait of Gibraltar without leaving Spain. Punta de Tarifa is the Southernmost part of Europe. The view of the Rock of Gibraltar is best from Algeciras.

When I go to a Country I've never been to before I try and read up on it, find out all I can, the first days I'm there I take in all the famous sites, the days afterward I look for all the things that are off the beaten track, that's when I find just how nice the place is and how friendly the people are, and how good the food is, lot's of nice stuff in Spain and as it is in Portugal, have fun.
