Now I'm perplexed, for I certainly don't want to offend Muslims:

Iran gives new name to Danish pastries

(By Ali Akbar Dareini, Associated Press)

TEHRAN -- Iranians love Danish pastries, but when they look for the flaky dessert at the bakery they now have to ask for ''Roses of the Prophet Mohammed."

{{by the way, i am not making this up}}

ADDED: Just had some brain activity: I should have included another option:

5) Freedom-of-speech pastries

every bit as logical as freedom fries.

Or "Liberty cabbage"? Sorry, but I couldn't resist that jab (it's from WW1, FYI).

Oh balls. Now I really, really fancy a danish pastry and there's not a bakery for miles *sniff*

If in doubt, use the generic term for just about any cake in a bakery.

"Can I have one of them (stab finger at delicious pastry) there with the icing on, thanks."

They still have bakeries?

*dazed look*

Of course. Every English village, small town, community still has a bakery.

Even the big supermarkets have on site bakeries, working there at night is hell, when the ovens start up at 4am. *groan*. I stuck it for 8 months.

i used to work in a bagel shop. i loved it because i worked from 4 am til noon, then had the afternoon to do what needed to be done.

I live within walking distance (a few blocks any way) of a number of bakeries: 2 Russian, One French, an old-fashioned bagel shop (vs. that NY chain), One an SF 'landmark' producing sourdough bread. I go to the Mission district for Mexican pastry (pan dulce). The sourdough bakery is on the next block so I always have fresh bread, and I love the aroma every morning as I walk by on my way to my bus stop.

Am i the only one with no nearby bakery? (Nearby as in less than about 50 miles)

pm me the address and they will be on their way tomorrow morning.
They won't get here. Ice storm moving in tonight, and i'm betting the state will shut down for at least three days.

Same here :) Just got back from buying enough food to hole up for 3 days. It makes me nervous when they act like they do not know how bad it's going to be. Yes, they are being more honest when they are vague, but still...

PS - Awww hell! Forgot to buy some pastries.

We have the weirdest things here: two bakeries that aren't good.

I've never in my life come across a bakery that wasn't wonderful. It's just the nature of the beast--fresh-baked stuff just can't help being wonderful, like water can't help being wet. And yet we have two bakeires that are just not worth the time.

One of them's run by a guy who just bought it and doesn't know what he's doing. It used to be good, but no more.

The other one makes Lebanese bread, which seems to be deliberately tasteless and made without salt. Their stuff feels like bread, but it tastes like baked paper.

Thankfully, we also have a great bagel and bialy bakery here, and another Jewish place that makes the best Russian rye bread in the entire world. A loaf of their rye and a stick of butter and I'm in heaven.

They are certainly rare (even thought supermarkets are resurrecting them), but once you find one, STICK WITH IT!
