Is that their country is no longer a great power, and never will be again.

The British have accepted that. The French have. The Germans, Italians, Japanese, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, all have accepted that their lost empires are lost forever.

Why can't the Russians?

And, you would have to cancel Pushkin. Therefore, the Russian language as it is.

What has Pushkin to do with Russian imperialism?
Quite a lot, as I understand (mostly from secondary sources though, I admit). His poetry, for starters, quite literally. He's an imperial poet, and Russian chauvinist. Then the Russian is often called by Russians the language of Pushkin. Not (only) in the sense of the language he used, but as a language he created. That's about when "all russias" became The Russia. So yes, the Russians went to war with Ukraine to force them to love Pushkin.

Then, the Ukrainians should just promise to include Pushkin courses in all their high-school curricula, and then the Russians would go away.
