What song do you "hear" as you read someone's post? (Maybe the fluffiest thread ever)

La la la, this is a fluffy thread!

I have synesethesia which gives me an "extra" way of perceiving the world (so to speak). It becomes very prominant when I am trying to concentrate. Some of the letters would be flashing different colors when I used to play competitive Scrabble. I can suddenly get the powerful taste of watermelon in my mouth as I say a certain phrase when talking to a crowd. Now some of you might have experienced such things after a large dose of psychedelics, but this is considered daily experience for me.

Anyway, some posters have said they imagine the poster's voice reading someone's posts....but how about "hearing" a song when reading a specific person's posts?

So spit it out!

Do you hear "Boys and Girls" by Blur playing in the background when you read Etoile's posts? What do you hear when Shadowsdream says something? Does Catalina have a different song from Francisco?

Now is the time to be heard on such monumental issues!

Hi Mr. Blonde,

I'm reading a book about this right now (and wrote a research paper on it back in college. ) Never met anybody who actually has it though. Some of the imagery is wonderful -- like mint tasting like cool rods of glass -- very poetic.

I think I had a bit of this (if it's possible to have just a bit) back when I was a kid. First poem I wrote was in color, written in felt pen. I remember the sense that the letter 't' was navy blue, 'v' was a sort of mauvy lavendar, and e was either red or green. Can't remember which. Also, I have a slight 'olfactory sense of this -- going into places I don't like I've gotten whiffs of that hospital smell, and around people I like I get a passing whiff of orange blossom. It's so quick it's just a flash, not pronounced enough to have worried me.

According to the book, which I haven't finished yet, the hypothesis is that synesthesia is something that occurs at the basic building block stage of perception. That it's like you are aware of a really basic almost lizard brain level of your own functioning, or something.

This all has something to do with the reason why we can understand use expressions such as 'seeing red' for anger, or feeling blue, or for that matter, saying the cheese tastes 'sharp.' We use cross-perceptions all the time in descriptions.

I only get songs that pop into my head like that for people I love and in certain circumstances, and I think it's more of a right-brain thing than a synesthesia thing but who knows. It feels, in some cases, like the song came on its own without me picking it. For instance, when my son was born, "Lets' get it all together' by the Stylistics, would start up in my head when I picked him up to nurse him, and I hadn't heard that song in ages, or ever connected it to anything or anyone.
I think when reading people's messages, first when seeing their name I get a sense of color and sort of texture -- but this probably has a lot to do with their av and the name they choose. For instance, Fungiup I get this black-green color and sort of a thick-full -impression -- probably just an abstract sense of his av combined with Fungi. Netzach is more red, and slicey rather than billowy like fungiup, iykwim -- and I bet you don't. Sunfox more of a gold color (which might have to do with name again) combined with a sort of upward direction.) Etoile small and night sky with stars-ish (again because of the name I suppose).

Anyway, I just try to picture people in their own milieiu (sp?) if I can -- for instance, Etoile hard at work at a desk doing editing and graphic computer stuff or something, looking small and sweet and sort of lost in paperwork, imminently smart and rescueable.

Enough of me. How fascinating to hear how a Synesthete sees/hears/(or even tastes?) everyone! Do Tell!

When I see ammre's nick, I sort of get the little Billy from "The Shining" (Kubrick's version) whispering "redrum, redrum" between my ears. It's spooky and funny the same time.

But my hp director isn't working so I can't change it except to a couple I tried first that are even worse in diff ways. (was trying to scare general boarders with this one -- and wanted a phoenix to match the name.)

(Since Mr.Blonde isn't here to stop us, or scare me off with his moss-covered toes, I'll continue hijack.) seems like the music would kinda defeat the purpose of x, though. in fact take one in rather the opposite direction, mood-alteration-wise. Or is that no longer the thing at raves? can think of alterants that would be much more congruent with the sound.

Yeah, the song I made actually used ym2129 (Atari ST sound chip i.e. 80's computer music) emulator and then processed the sound. Then put it through a hard ass beat. It's more about the beat and the tripped feel, more for the blending of drugs. I have never done drugs so I would never be able to tell you what drugs are in or out. Though ecstasy is still in but meth is overtaking it. It is kinda scary seeing some people binge on them. Sketchy meth heads = bad.

Quint (wherever the hell she went?) makes me think of 70's or 60's redux indie pop. Something like Rocketship or the Shins. (ok, indie on steroids)

Pure is something Baroque and mathematical. Bach or Cole Porter.

Evesdream is something really ambient and spare, OK by Talvin Singh or Tetsu Inoue's stuff.

PS's theme songs would be something mathematical but messy, like John Zorn covering Ennico Morricone.

Played the link you gave me for djbooboo. Got a major thumbs-up from the 7year old (who drew the jazzy 'arrogant kitty pretending to be queen elizabeth' Av.) She said 'turn it All the Way Up!' The 4 year old wasn't as enthusiastic, so just me and the 7 year old danced.

back in the day -- several years before you were born -- oh, never mind, thinking about how this is a public forum and some day i may run for Congress, better not wax nostalgic about anything more mind-altering than spacey music. Thanx for the new sounds.

I don't hear *songs* per se..I see colors, literally. Some of my favorite posters get these combo's whenever i read up on them:

Vixandra~crystal blue and silver
Netzach~ midnight black/white (like a dark winter sky with no moon)
DustyWolfe/Jessalynvix~always a pink/blue combo
Fungi~ varying shade of green...(could be cuz of his av)
Rosco~blood red

I wish I could hear music for them but all I get is automatic color flashes

pet, I don't get you as a color, more a texture. Kinda chenille.

catalina -- a sweep of light skybluish, with a small crimson streak and some black squiggles. sort of a drawing. xelebes still looks like his av to me but I get a cartoony figure of a guy, skinny, with a kind of shock of bangs over his forehead. Netzachs red slicey-ness is quite 3D, on a black background. Mr.Blonde is a patch of white with some other colors red and black but not clear yet. Sunfox I see as one of her avs but 3d and in color. For some reason, bridgeburner and quint look a little bit alike to me, probably because I like them or because of avs. Bridgeburner I think is so different from her av that I can't see her right yet. very back there in the iodine blue.

Pure is SO the only one I hear in music, like Netzach described. Can see him in the bdsm castle in the library, wearing a smoking jacket.

RR is Kid Rock (but only to annoy, because i know it teases)

Love the music ones and hope to hear more. I'm such a musical Cretin. (not that there's anything wrong with Crete, or cretinism.)
