What Makes Writing Memorable?

I'm reading several novels by Robert Crais. Before he wrote novels he wrote tv scripts. His scripts were popular as are his novels. But his novels suffer from a common problem: People cant recall what they read. Its strange how soon his stories fade.

There are two ways to make it memorable. First one and is easier is to write it so horribly that it makes it hard to puzzle out. Second one is to include something that makes you go hmm, or is a truly horrible thing so the reader can't help but remember that.

For the second one the truly horrible things are easier to do since being ripped apart or brutally raped are easy to add in to happening. In certain instances a sex scene works, though usually it is for a romance angle and can't happen until the end.

Course the sex scenes in a romance are variable on when they appear but to be remembered it has to take a while to lead up to it. It's easy to find a romance where she is tossed down and taken by the hero early and often.

This guy is well liked because he writes up novels and TV shows that make sense, there's no pause to go what the fuck was that. He also doesn't include the horrible things so in that respect you will forget the episode or story but wouldn't mind going back and reading/watching it again.

He is what is called a safe writer. As in he will have sales or get people to watch the show, but he doesn't push the envelope. Makes him not good for movies since those have to stand out and his work doesn't really, it's more or less average but not really type thingy.

Sure! None of his tv scripts stuck in my mind. Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, Law and Order all run together, like watching water go over the falls.
