many will say I do it because I do it - I do it for myself--it just pours out

pothers will wsay "I want to become an established poet"

others will take pleasure from the odd publication sin little mags

others will write poetry as an alternative to killing themselves

others will write poetry to pour out the passion within that cannot be expressed in their current social/sexual relationships

I don't believe there aws many reasons to write poetry as their are poets but there are obviously quite a few

All of the above. :)

Someone once asked Joan Didion why she writes, and to loosely paraphrase her she said something like "I write because I have to, because it's how I understand myself." I agree with that. I often find that until I have written something--even if reference to what is really on my mind is obscured to the reader, I have a better understanding of how I feel.

And I write because I have to--I can't imagine not writing poetry at this point in my life. It has become almost a reflex. :)

agrees with ange...all of the above!
writing is a release, of sometimes pent up emotions that would eventually find their way out in a more twisted form.
sometimes poetry is capturing a moment, or emotion that someone else would enjoy reading about, or can relate to.
i read poetry to have my senses touched, the deeper the better, so i keep that in mind when i write. is anyone(self included) going to feel anything by reading the poetry i write?
i hope so, it is in part why i write poetry.
poetry pleases the senses!!

Yes. Poetry is about making the reader feel. If you read my poem and your senses react to my words, I did it the right way. ;)

LOL! I saw your public comment and cracked up. I've always thought that--that poetry is first and formost about evoking reaction from a reader's senses, and I've said it here before. I totally forgot that was the focus of Metapoetics because I wrote that sonnet too. I assume you read my comment here and then the poem. Talk about consistency, hehe.

Why do I write

I write

1. to share what I know with others

2. to help them understand

3. to make them think

:p

:D

Razz

others will write poetry as an alternative to killing themselves

but sometimes I wonder if killing myself would hurt less than writing? no, I d o not intend to find out, not today ;)

I've been writing poetry since I was a child, so now it's like brushing my teeth, just more enjoyable.

For the heck of it.

And to up my grip on language.

That was at least why I started writing poems, as an excersise, to see if I could find new ways to express myself in my song lyrics and prose. And then I kind of got addicted to the form and the challenge of it all.

It's not that I need to write poetry as catharsis or an outlet for my emotions, I have plenty other venues for that. I could do fine without poetry, without going nuts.

I was hoping to score some of those beat poetry chicks...ya know
the black beret and they smoke Gauloise and drink hard liquor.
I hear they " do it" with anyone.

I've always written
since the age of 6 or 7 anyway
My mom recently gave me a box of stuff she had saved from my grade school years and there were stories and poems and what not all scrawled in crayon with backward letters.

I have to write or I would have killed myself by now.
It's a purge
It's a wish
It's an exploration of spirituality and sexuality and I put it out there so when people say " yes....good" I know I'm not the only crazy one on the planet

Gauloise are way too expensive baby, and I haven't worn a black beret since my tenth halloween. I drink diet Coke and as for doing it with anyone. Well, I'm pretty sure I'd do it with Al Pacino on very short notice but otherwise I make no promises. :D

It was a dopey image. Anyway I'm stopping before my list gets any longer and I prove your point! ;)

you all have me confused...does there need to be a reason to write poetry? it just happens, and the part about writing as not to kill one's self, that made me think of Poe...and if writing was a segway to getting laid, then i would be writing for Pres Clinton and Tommy Lee Jones..oh, and maybe sandra bullock and angeline jolie :D ( on a really kinky day)

but serioulsy, it took thre deaths in my family and a host of near tragedy ( angeline, you know what I mean) to bring mine out, and its about the only thing good to come from losing both parents, a grandma and a cousin in less than three years....

I write it

to meet girls who look ike you

(actually, back in the 60's poets got laid all the time automatically - you just said you were a poet and they dragged you off (mostly first year frosh--occasionally professors but them for more complex reasons I think) - and it didn't really matter if the poetry were very bad or not because they knew absolute dick about poetry - urrmmm

they wore garter belts and stockings and sweet frillies and slips and all sorts of things which are only found in museums now

they didn't carry around a yardstick to measure penis size because that concept was still in the future--they hadn't seen 2,348 dicks on the Net

they had seen maybe . . . uh . . . six and at least one was on their kid brother and another on their Dad and he was flaccid at the time -

But I digress - I only came in to compliment your AV Eve

As absurdly simplistic as it sounds, I write because it's fun. Sometimes a word combination will catch my eye and inspire me to build something around it. That's the case with my current poem awaiting approval. Six words started the entire poem. Most of my poems contain puzzles and hidden patterns. I find it enormously entertaining to quietly embed these puzzles, so most readers are oblivious until I point them out.

Ok, the real reason I write is because it keeps me out of most trouble and it's cheaper than posting bail. ;)
