What is your favorite Charity and Why?

Can I have two favourite charity's?

I also lean towards Cystic Fibrosis, my best friends daughter has Cystic Fibrosis and a cure needs to be found for this cruel disease.
My second favourite charity is the 'Make a wish foundation' because they paid for my friends daughter to visit Disneyland.

I support many charities, I don't think I have a favorite.

My church gets the largest donation from me each year. United Way is in second place in terms of $. The local zoo is in third place, or at least it has been for the last couple years.

Even though I give to United Way because they support so many groups, I still end up giving to the groups individually. I also support my old schools and various scholarship funds from other groups. Also anonymous donations here and there of cash.

Part of the responsibility of being given much is sharing with others. I'm not quite to the level of the people who tithe, but I'm close if I add up all of the contributions (and not just those to church.) Charity is important, no matter which group you support.

I don't have a favorite

I don't know where all the money goes, but United Way was the group I was first introduced to as a child. My company used to have direct contribution through payroll. We could donate bi-weekly. I felt like I was doing something important, and it was a check I didn't have to remember writing.

I have participated in a few efforts. CF is a biggie. To think of children who can't breathe for the cement in their chests makes mine hurt. I'm fortunate. I work for a company whose employees are some of the most generous people I have ever met. A running joke around here, "What am I supporting now?" and it is said with love.

We participate in a habitat project, cancer runs, aids races. We read to children, and I was introduced to a group I'm proud to volunteer with now. I belong to the Optimist Club, a youth organization that strives to support and encourage our youth to be all they can be.

In wake of our recent crisis, the employees alone raised $700,000. Our company matched and we also lost employees in our New York offices. Our corporation topped 5million in donations. Yeah, this is one of the reasons I stay with my company. People care.

Lastly, I serve as a judge for a writing competition my company sponsors. The scholarship was established in honor of a former employee who died from breast cancer. We have a dinner for the recipients and their families and the husband attends. It's pretty moving to know you're helping someone, and honoring someone is gratifying in terms I can't express.

Peace,

daughter

My favorite isn't actually a charity, it is the tuition assistance fund at my son's school. It is a small private school that takes the kids other schools, both public and private, don't want. They do wonderful work with these kids and have given many young people a chance at a better future. I also support Boy Scouts, my son spent many happy years in Scouting. I know it isn't politically correct, but there are many good things about the scouting program.

Thanks for the responses

My next questions is this: Do any of you actively seek donation to any of these charities or do you just give when asked to contribute?

Thanks

Holden

The first question is what charities.

Is that International, National or Local?

I give to charities in all three categories usually to do with animal welfare and cancer.

With regard to your second question my answer is neither. I make regular monthly donations with occasional top ups when the charity asks.

Your second question

I volunteer with one organization as I mentioned so I suppose that is offering before being asked.

I have donated to those in need whenever I become aware of the need. That often means it's not a charity fundraiser.

Peace,

daughter

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids has been my main "project" the last dozen years or so. I've lost too many friends because of aids, and was affected initially by the insensitivity of peers when it was first labeled a "gay" desease.

Through the years I have actively volunteered my time selling items in lobbies of Broadway shows, and have participated in several seasons of the annual Flea Market in Shubert Alley.

This year BC/EFA has contributed part of their earnings to breast cancer and firefighter funds as well as certain children's projects.

I have given to the Salvation Army most consistently as I think they do a lot of good work. I have also given to a few orphanages, one in Africa and one in the Balkans.

I do not give to United Way because I specifically do not want my money to go to some of the questionable "charities" and causes they support. If there is a charity I want to support then I give to it directly.

I also do not generally give money to charities that are foundations for curing some disease I or a relative has. I find the guilt trips that such foundations put on you, and the hope they try to hold out for cures for your loved ones, so you will give them money, reprehensible.

More importantly, I do not go around fund raising for those foundations, and I find such fund raising offensive, especially when it is by someone who comes up to me and says "My sister has breast cancer, will you give your time or money to help find a cure".

Even more offensive is when someone lobbies for governmental aid for such causes.

That would be my friend.... Charity. ;)

I met her at school about two and a half years ago, and I adore her. She moved to Southern Ohio, but we go and visit a lot.

Really though.....

I hold a special place in my heart and pocketbook for the local sheltered worshop. Why because they teach job sklls to the mentally challenged and give them dignity in the process. I believe all people should have the right to earn money and feel that they have a skill to offer in the job market. I volunteer with the children's law center too. A special place that advocates for children rights first. To me the greatest gift one can give to another person esp. children is to be heard. I also volunteer at Special Olympics. It never fails to make me feel great to be a part of it.

charities and why?

I donate on a regular basis to our humane society....because we are a small community, we don't have a shelter, all these pets are in foster homes and I pitch in to help cover the costs for these peole who are kind enough to open their homes...since I can't.
Plus I send a donation about every 3 months to St. Jude's because I'm a sucker for kids and they deserve every chance they can get. The doctors there are so amazing.
