Last night, while waiting for a friend to be treated, I had mine taken and it came in at 156/95. I had just walked a couple of hundred feet from somewhere else in the hospital and was only sitting two minutes when the reading was taken by a machine.

1.Is that too high?

2.Are you supposed to be sitting still for a certain time before it is taken?

From lifeclinic.com, tips on reliably checking BP..

*Be seated, with your arms bared, supported and at heart level.
*Do not smoke or drink caffeinated beverages 30 minutes before testing.
*Sit quietly for five minutes before starting measurement.
*Make sure the measurement cuff fits comfortably around your arm.
*Take two or more readings, at least two minutes apart, and average results.
*Make sure your measurement cuff has been checked for accuracy.

Hey, is that why doctors always make you wait so long in that little room before the nurse shows up to take your pressure and temperature?

I dunno but maybe if we are patient the nurses here will chime in and help us with an opinion on this matter. I had to take a friend to the er the other night for serious pain that and an ambulance ride wouldn't be covered for. She's in respiratory and another nurse I know works there. Walking around while my friend got treatment kinda made ME re-think a bit.

Most patients get "white coat syndrome". where the visit to the Dr. actually makes their pressure rise, but Dr's. usually take that into account. Yours as posted wally is a little high. 140/80 or around it is considered normal.

yeah my BP rises when I goto the dentist and the dr, then they gripe at me for having high BP - well geez....lately though it's been in the 130/80 range

but....it has spiked a time or two recently for an unknown reason - dr's say 'you have a healthy heart' geeez

I just have to chime in here.

Considering that mine runs in the 74/56 to 78/60 range, and that is considered low, yea your's is high.

However given the stress that you were likely under that could account for it.

Should you be sitting a certain length of time before it is taken? Not necessarily. But again the situation should be taken into consideration.

I would say that you should probably make an appointment with your doctor and tell him or her what happened and see what they say about it.

I really wasn't under any stress. The last thing he had me on for this condition was Lisinopril 40mg. At the time, my bp was 140/90 and he said it should be treated. I'm going to make time for that appt. soon!

Wally make that appointment on Monday.

Don't put it off until Tuesday.

120/80 is the perfect score.

So yes.. it is too high.

Anything may have caused it though. Even coffee just before.

I have a self test now... and it varies slightly from day to day. My BP is 134/88 on average at the moment. Slightly high, but my doc is pleased... considering it was 165/104 once....

I never bother to visit a doctor. Doctors scare me. So do needles and pricks.

Far too bloody high!- gets even higher when I walk into a doctors surgery too... (I don't like it!)

Yes, that is high...normal is 120/80. But B/P rises with stress, exertion, etc.

Mine typically runs low...90/60.

Now I am on meds for this, have been for 6 months, it is now down to 185/130, was 220/140, But my pulse rate is really good 61.

...at 220/140, you're lucky you didn't have a stroke. That is very high.

Thats what all my nurse friends keep telling me, and the Dr, but I feel fit and fine, and I hate taking all these pills.

At least the Doc and I get a good laugh each month when he does the test, we try and guess if it is up or down.

One of the higher readings I have heard of too I suppose, at least for someone who hasn't stroked yet.
