I saw an interview on PBS with an ex-military veteran who was advocating for the United States to evacuate another 175,000 Afghanis on top of the 82,000 current evacuees before ending the operation. He also recommended President Biden call the Taliban's bluff on its 8/31 redline and extend the operation an additional five days to allow for those evacuations.

Does that seem reasonable and rational to you???

Too high???

Too low???

Bonus question:

Are the media and ex -military personnel too close to their contacts in foreign countries to be objective in situations like this???

I heard this guy on NPR...actually I think it was during the BBC hour. He is a fuckhead.

How many months do you need to leave? This date was set in April. I also heard the number evacuated so far is over 100k. I am good with whatever number we can get out by the deadline. Otherwise...fuck em.

I think this fits

Fair enough.

As a reference; America evacuated 7,000 after the fall of Saigon.

The 31 August date isn't really an issue with the Taliban. There are other threats, beyond the Taliban, out there, most credibly from the ISIS-K. There might be a slaughter outside the gates of the airport on September 1st that the Taliban will not be responsible for.

I suspect you're saying that getting out by the deadline removes additional opportunities for a marginal terrorist group to score a status boosting hit at America's expense.

I see it that way as well, which is in keeping with the message President Biden has been delivering on a near daily basis. Get out the maximum possible by the deadline, then see where we stand.

If we stay beyond 8/31, there had better be a very compelling reason.

This doesn't mean I don't think it could have been done better. It has been a clusterfuck.

Leaving a concert or a sporting event is usually a clusterfuck, and often becomes even more so when something unexpected happens right as the crowd is leaving.

The traitor in chief's "Doha deal", his sabotaging of the Special Immigrant Visa program, his blocking of defense briefings for President Biden's incoming administration, and his attempted coup, all definitely contributed to the chaos as America was leaving Afghanistan.

And still, the United States is successfully conducting an unprecedented operation under those challenging conditions with tens of thousands of people being flown out in a few days time with almost zero loss of American lives and relatively little military confrontation between our forces and the Taliban. So far it s looking like President Biden made the right call in sticking to the timeline despite the inevitable chaos.

I'm sure there are those who would have loved nothing more than for America to surge a hundred thousand more troops and spend trillions of dollars more to "retake" Afghanistan from the Taliban, just so they could continue with their various agendas.

I'm not one of them.

The number of Americans still requiring evacuation is now about 1500. Not much.

Concerts have toilets. Where we evacuated people didn't. If that is the best our military could do...well that speaks loudly doesn't it?

^^ some truly 1st world suburban bubble starbucks and uggs level of detachment from reality.

You're so far removed from reality you don't even realize most the world still squats to shit on the street or in a hole.

Toilets are a rare ultra rich people thing in Afghanistan, 99.9% have been squatting to shit in a hole in the ground, or just openly on the street, which runs with raw sewage, their whole lives.

Most Afghanis will squat on top of a toilet and shit all over it unless you show them how to use the silly thing. Because most have never even seen a toilet.

Besides if our military can piss/shit into a hole, bucket, bag or on a tree/fence line....so can the fuckin' fugees.

Biden has already said that he will extend our presence there past 8/31 as long as there are more people to evacuate.

My impression was that the military was designed to kill people. Imagine my surprise to learn on the interwebs that they are also responsible for providing shitters.

To be honest, Biden has said that the Aug 31st date was a firm date,
but to cover his ass politically, he has also said that if needed,
evacuation efforts would continue past that date.

Of course, The Taliban havn't agreed to that.

They're a humanitarian force for social progress that exist to for promoting racial and gender equity, social justice and providing 1st world amenities to every hard case situation.

The whole mission of the Infantry is to distribute Starbucks and Ugg boots to all the starvin' soccer moms of the world!!!

Didn't you know??

Next thing you know it will be the job of the military to provide them all with a house in Malibu or Santa Cruz and a Toyota Prius.

Education is a choice. What's your excuse?

OK, but what do you think the final number of evacuees should be??

Does the approximately 250,000 number the ex-military veteran suggested sound about right to you??

The vast majority of that number is obviously Afghanis. Did that many Afghanis (even with families included) assist our military to the point that the Taliban would target them??

Is there any number that would satisfiy the bleediest of hearts and shut up the Deplorables who just want to make the number a talking point??

Calling the Taliban's bluff is kinda stupid. It’s not like they are afraid of fighting the US, had been doing just that for the last 20 years. What do they have to lose?

Yeah, there had better be an extremely compelling reason for the military to stay past 8/31.

Lose? They beat us. Time to accept reality
