A fellow male marine giving you a blowjob at the VFW does not equate to a national day of celebration.

It's a holiday that Christians celebrate, you heathen.

It's a patriotic holiday in Mexico, and has nothing to do with religion. The invading French were generally of the same faith as the defending Mexicans.

I never said otherwise. Mexicans are primarily Christian. I'm sure many Mexicans think that Mexico is a Christian nation, same as the US.

Cinco de mayo =5 th of may.The day Mexico beat the French Occupiers.Napoleon put his cousin into Spain as governor.Spain had Mexico as a vassel state that paid its taxes to Spain as a colony.

So the French ruled Spain ,and wanted to take everything not nailed down to defray the costs of the Napoleonic wars, stripping as much assets as they could. This was like round 3 ,with Napoleon the 3rd.

So the celebration is one of kicking out despotic rulers sucessfully.

You are wrong in a number of details. First, Mexico was independent at the time, and the French emperor Napoleon III decided to conquer land in the Western Hemisphere while the US was involved in their own civil war.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo

Second, the term "Napoleonic Wars" usually refers to a series of conflicts in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Third, the battle of Puebla was not decisive, except for boosting Mexican morale, and the French continued with their conquest and ruled most of the land. Then the American Civil War ended, and the POTUS said, in effect, "Get out of our hemisphere." Knowing they would have gotten their asses severely kicked by the huge American army and navy, combined with the still-rebellious Mexicans, the French left is a big hurry.

From my book of daYS} BY guen Sublette,

pg 102,May 5th marks the day when against overwhelming odds,Mexican soldiers changed history by successfully holding back Napoleon the 3rds overconfident brigade. They defeated the French at the battle of Puebla,1862,Seems to be almost as American as apple pie as a holiday in the US southwest, with 15 % of the American pop being hispanic, even though these days ,its celebrated to have a good time...

Geographically,Spain sits next door to France to the South.Personally ,I have Irish in my ma s side,Irelands a Island nation offshore from France, maybe 200 miles ,while England/U K is closer at closest ,maybe 35 miles.\Scotlands on the north end of Englands island ,at its closest point is 9 miles to Ireland.

.They used to speak Gaelic, which is still spoke on the coastal fishing villages of France, when France used to be called Gaul, hence Gaelic language, which is old French.
