What is the point of writing "pm sent" in a thread?

I'm just asking out of curiosity. It just seems a bit masterbatory (pardon the term) to write "pm sent" after sending someone a pm.

Sometimes a person does not have their pm box set to receive messages and its just a way to let them know that an attempt has been made to contact someone.

As does yours - I always took it that way too. Might make someone turn away - may make someone decide to sharpen their PM knowing there is some competition.
