What is the difference betwen a story in the novel/novella category as opposed to a multi-chapter story in any of the other genres?

It used to be just that a place for longer stories but everyone is doing the chapter thing more and more....

Yeah I've been wondering this too. Not only that the whole Short Story/Novella/Novel thing confuses me. What's the difference besides length? I've seen a couple of threads here on this that didn't really seem to answer anything.

 MJL

I agree with Tx. More and more people are doing the chapter thing these days, myself included. I think it's because the Novels/Novellas category can be very intimidating to readers, while releasing a chapter at a time in the appropriate category in serial fashion builds a broader reader base. Timed correctly, the chapters keep the reader on edge, and coming back for more. At least that's why I do it. *shrugs*

And Welcome to the AH! :D

I agree with the both of you....I accidently started a series that has stretched for 14 chapters now, and really, now it would be better suited to be in the Novel/Novella category.

Yes timing is very important when releasing chapters. I posted three chapters of a story in three week period. I got a ton of positive feedback about it. Then I got busy and waited six months before posting anymore chapters and the audience/interest in the story had pretty much dissapeared.

As for the novels/novellas category it seems pretty pointless because you can't really tell what the specific genre of the story is. Whether it be fantasy/Romance..etc. All you know is, it's going to be long.

I've gone as long as 3 months between chapters, and I didn't lose any readers...although, I do admit 3 months is too long to make them wait.

Maybe it's a category that Lit should look at closing...who knows....

I see N&N as a sort of catch-all category. As mentioned above, there is no particular genre for N&N, so a story in that category can go anyway you choose. It just has to be long enough.

Even though it gets far fewer readers than other cats, I'm very satisfied with how well my Pretty Baby series has done. Across the six chapters, I've gotten about 50,000+ views. I've included everything from non-consent to exhibitionism, anal to group sex, romance to even a touch of horror.

I plan on posting more in that category, in fact.

Maybe there should be a way of pushing/advertising the Novels/Novellas cat. a bit more...
I have no idea how this would be done, but it ought to be <nods firmly>

PS-
For Love or Money, Ch.01

For those who are interested. Should I try re-submitting it to another cat or just continue submitting them to this cat...?

I would say that depends on your reasons for writing. If you plan on going in different directions, I'd keep it in N&N. Also, I've noticed that the more dedicated and eloquent readers follow N&N. I have yet to get a troll hit in that cat.

Good insight to have :) Thanks!

Yeh, it's going to explore some diverse and kinky aspects. Thanks for the advice.

Well, it's already off to a great start. I'm reading it now.

When the category was created, it was meant as a location for longer stories on Lit. It became a separate category pretty much the same way Non Erotic and Non English did (before Lit revamped the site to allow people to click and choose their native language)...they all held a specific purpose that was special and different from the other categories!

While it is true that Novels & Novellas receives fewer reads than other categories, I think the "chapter" stories don't belong there with the exception of each submission being a specific (long) length.

I am glad to see that the rules for the popular Survivor contest have been revamped to have a word minimum for N & N and different scoring. Hopefully they keep up this trend in future years as well! :)

The novels and novellas was also created as a place for completed long stories that don't fit in any other single category.

As originally concieved, there should be no stories in N&N that are "to be continued" or never-ending "soap opera" style series.

That's how I see it. I wrote Pretty Baby in its entirety, then chopped it up and posted it in parts. But it's a stand-alone work; no sequel.

ahh...

this thread has answered many questions i had. thanks, everyone.

i have my Blood Bonds series in N&N. to tell the truth, i'm not sure why i originally put it there, except that, my reasoning was most likely that it was/is going to be a long series (honestly, i may have been aiming for Nonhuman when i was choosing categories and didn't notice i chose wrong).

My first chapter had many, many, many views and they have petered off since, which may have something to do with the writing, but that's not the point...

i am planning on moving new installments to Nonhuman, where they belong. i guess i should put a note at the top telling people where to find the others? i hate to be a pain and have the whole thing moved just because i'm annoyed with myelf.
