Yes, I know I copied Blondgirl's thread, and I hope she forgives me... but posting to her thread just really depressed me, and I want to think about the good aspects of my job.

  • The kids draw me pictures all the time and tell me they love me; it makes me feel as if i really may be making some sort of impact on their lives
  • Parents thanking me for the work I do with their children
  • Being able to act like a 6 year old at times, and not feel embarrassed
  • Being able to laugh at least once a day at work, about something or other
  • The feeling I get when a kid I'm working with finally understands a concept I've been trying to teach them
  • The feeling I get when the kid comes in the next day, can actually remember the concept, and can apply it to his or her work

Please tell about the best aspects of your job.

It's almost the same list for me, lilminx. And I teach college.

:D

And I'm not being facetious, either.

I love what I do, in spite of the administration-nazis.

 to you and all teachers.

For me it is people who use my books to learn a type of art work that they could not have done themselves by just looking at the finished picture of a piece. I get heaps of mail from around the world from people on how much satisfaction it brings them being able to produce what they think is something of beauty with their own hands.

In the end the world is about making people happy and if I do that for a few, that makes me smile :)

I'm a student so my job is basically to read (and drink copious amounts of hard alcohol :D).
I enjoy being a student and I love my academia. I guess the most satisfying thing for me is to actually broaden my knowledge. I'm a sucker for knowledge.

Halo :rose:

*bending T.H.Oughts over the table, shagging her from behind* hunni... get rid of this AV. you are making me all hot and bothered. :D

Halo :rose:

I teach and I just wrote about it in the other thread.

I feel many of the same joys and pains that you do. My students are juniors and seniors in high school and adults. (technical college).

My students are the best part. Building friendships and relationships and getting to know them. Watching them succeed and celebrating their learning with them. I AM SO PROUD of them!

Halo :rose:

I concur.

Please remove it or in lieu of that remove the clothing.

Thanks for your anticipated compliance.

Now that I bitched on the other thread, I can say what I love best about my job here. There is no greater satisfaction knowing you went to work and saved someones dad, mom, child, grandparent etc... Knowing you changed someones life that day. Knowing that you stopped someones life going up in flames. I wouldn't want to do anything else-ever!

The best part of my job is that I walk into a dissaster & make everything alright again, saving the year or their career sometimes.:)

Today, I had two different patients come to my office just to give me a hug. One, I had arranged for her to see a lung doctor and he told her she was fine except for a "touch of the flu". This patient looks like the proverbial old snotty lady--until she smiles. Then the entire place lights up. I can't help but love her.

Then the other patient. She is always upbeat and expressing joy. Her life has improved since I have entered it. She is one that I have given my personal e-mail address to. She struggles financially and I do my best to work deals for her with the specialists she sees. Before I quit this job, I want to see her reach her health goals and be free from her body-burdens. LOL--The first time I got to meet her face-to-face (after countless phone conversations with or about her), it was her birthday and she was in the clinic. I told her I could offer her some cool pens and opened my drawer and handed her a handful of Oxy and Viagra and Prozac pens. She loved them. I loaded her up again today. By being able to impact her life so many (big and little) positive ways, she has impacted mine too.

There are patients who call me at home or on my cell or at work to "just tell me what is going on." There is one that brings me a sandwich or other homemade goodies every time she comes in. One child brings me a picture she has colored every time--they decorate the back of my office door. (I've promised her that I will never take them down.) My son is a regular face up there and most of my patients know him and his name and ask about him regularly. I am invited to participate in their crab boils and birthday parties and other celebrations.

For once in my life, I have a job that really does matter to people and really makes a difference that I can witness. I really like being blessed with seeing the improvements in my patients' lives. I am finally feeling like I might be a woman that my children can be proud to be genetically linked to. Both of them.

Meeting the deadlines with out doing any bodily harm to those around me. ;)

I work in catering. When I do a wedding dinner, a graduation, bar mitzvah, whatever it may be, I know I have contributed to making the occasion special and memorable for people. But, I feel the more satisfaction in my work when I do a wake or a funeral luncheon, because I feel the I have made a small contribution to helping the loved ones on the road to healing.

Being able to act like a 6 year old at times, and not feel embarrassed

Being able to laugh at least once a day at work, about something or other

The feeling I get when a developer I'm working with finally understands theproblem I've been trying to show him/her

I was going to bitch in the other thread, but as I read, I found out that I really didn't have much to bitch about.

But, for this one, completing a big project, with my boss, on time and professionally, and hearing her get great compliments for a job well done.

We work well together and her praise is the same as mine.

There are two hugely satisfying things about my job.

1) I get to talk to people, all day. And about subjects and books that I think about and that have changed my perceptions of the world. My students and our conversations continue to teach me, all the time.

2) Sometimes, there's a wonderful moment when you can see a student just...reach out and get what you're trying to tell them, or to show them. That little flash, that *hint* of reaching someone on a level they'll remember, makes all the bullshit parts of academia worth it.

Having the ability to do a job where what I do matters and influences how things are done is the most satisfying to me.

Walking out the door at the end of the day knowing the work is done correct, I had a reasonable good time, and that four hundred plus people can fly on that aircraft safely to their journeys. Now it's time for a Guiness!

(left over memories of my former job before lay-off):D
