The common troll usually attacks stories on Literotica.

The political troll attacks anyone who doesn't share his (almost invariably 'his') wacko political views.

I'm a target for both varieties. :D
 
There are trolls that attack others, on a personal basis.

I have watched that happen, ever since My Orge Husband, He Who Must Be Obeyed, gave me a computer with an internet connection.

I knew people who were connected with computer knowledge before I met my Ogre Husband.

They made jokes among themselves, and there were rivalries. But nothing remotely approaching the poisonous attitude that exists today.

They had their professional reputations to consider, I suppose.
 
Pol-trolls waste even more of their lives finding, cutting & pasting articles and email forwards.

It's quite obvious that a potato knows more about politics than NeverEndingMe.

I would say he is garden variety; perhaps a factory worker who hates the 9 to 5 existence he wishes to escape.

Twitter boss admits firm is failing victims of trolling

Twitter's chief executive Dick Costolo has admitted that the company "sucks" when it comes to dealing with abuse and trolling on the service.

In a memo to staff, leaked to tech news website the Verge, he said that bullying behaviour on the network was driving users away.

He promised tougher action to deal with abusers.

A series of high-profile users have quit Twitter in recent months, citing online abuse.

In his memo to staff, Mr Costolo wrote: "We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we've sucked at it for years.

"It's no secret that the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day."

His words echo a December blog post in which the company admitted that it "was nowhere near being done making changes in this area".

It promises that, in coming months, it will bring in further user controls and improvements in the way users can report abusive accounts.

When a troll targeted US journalist Lindy West, setting up an account in her dead father's name, she wrote about it.

After describing some of the abuse, she received an email from the troll, apologising for his behaviour.

And Isabella Sorley, who was jailed after posting abusive messages on Twitter about feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez, has been attempting to make amends, appearing in media interviews condemning her own words and urging other young people not to follow in her footsteps.

Twitter's confession about how it deals with online abuse comes ahead of rumours that it is about to strike a deal with Google to make its 140-character updates more searchable on google.

Having a whacko political view doesn't make somebody a troll, on discussions about 9/11, there were (and still are) much more political trolls supporting the official version (and doing no good to their advance...)

Having and defending a strange political view is not trolling. The trolling begins with abuses, not backed up accusations or any ad hominem attacks.

In political discussons, trolls are provokers of tension, destroyers of sensibility, supporters of dumbness. While the variety troll just spreads his hatred, the political troll is doing a job. The job of counter-advertising. If he wants to see liberals as socialists, he repeats that over and over, exaggerates it, makes jokes about it, presents memes etc. The question is not if any of that stuff is believable. Like any advertising: people speak about it, adapt it, claiming that at least some of that might be true, making a whacko view a presentable view.

All you can do about it is: being fair, honest and believable, no matter of all that warfare. The more trolls occure, the more people learn to deal with their appearance. Problem is that some dumb user may not be a troll, but really that dumb and inconvincible. That's why counter-trolling isn't the answer.
 
Political trolling always backfires.

Running a negative campaign is one of the greater reasons why McCain and Palin lost their bid for the White House.

Good description of a troll and one type of troll in particular

The racial troll who can't go a day without looking for examples of racism so they can keep stirring the pot.

Think there is a brewing anger in America. For those that are working, earning a great income and you look at what you pay in taxes really starts to piss you off. Then you look at the obama kind, that get free housing, food stamps, refunds from the IRS when they don't even pay taxes, free iphones, free this and that...while they drive a brand new Cadilliac with a Louis Vuitton purse.

fuck that, those people need to get off welfare and get a job. time to make the obama kind pay their fair share.
 
Garden variety trolls are just assholes. Political trolls are assholes who by accident of birth are not at this moment waving a black flag from the top of some mid-east sand dune.
