Edit: It occurs to me I may have put this on the wrong board. I apologize, I had trouble finding a suitable board for previous topics, found this one fit the most for the last few, and I suppose it slipped my mind that the topic of this one shifted a lot from the last ones.
I'm in a bit of a weird situation and I'm trying to gain some outside perspective on this with regards to my story I'm writing.
Basically, I have a thing for masochistic women. I find it hot when women enjoy being degraded, humiliated and abused. And the weird thing for me, personally, is that I'm turned on by this even if I don't like the actual fetish involved because it's too intense and dark for me. I've found when it just comes down to the idea of seeing a woman fantasize about, eagerly talk about, or get excited at the idea of dark things happening to them, I have a way, way higher tolerance for that than I would about actually seeing those same dark fetishes actually played out in the story.
Getting to the point, I have a story I'm working on that revolves around an island nation populated by a people whose women are so kinky and submissive that slavery is legal and mandatory for all female residents. The degree to how deep this submission goes, however, varies by individual, so they're raised in freedom off of the island and given the opportunity to come back at any time once they're of age, and decide then just how deeply they wish to be enslaved.
While the focus is on those who become slaves and those who are treated like literal animals, I intend to imply, but not show in action, that this has basically no limits, and that there's almost no fantasy so depraved that a man can't find a woman willing to be subjected to it. And as the main character is filming a documentary about the country, I've been debating the concept of having her at least briefly talk to one of the women who fantasizes about the kinds of fates even more intense than being treated like dogs or cows or beasts of burden.
The main issue is that I'm worried that my tolerance for women fantasizing about darker fetishes is just me being weird, that most people have an equal amount of disgust for a fetish being talked about and a fetish being put into practice in a story, and that my audience would rather I not show these women in any capacity at all. So I thought I'd ask: When it comes to someone discussing or anticipating something rather than actually seeing the thing play out, how dark does the fetish need to go before the mere act of discussing it would make you uncomfortable?
