Recent remarks by California Governor Gray Davis prompts this line of thought, but it happens so regularly, that I don’t think it is proper to point fingers at either party.

Politician gets $X.00 from a source, any source let’s say Mr. “Y,” without question as if the person(s) donating the dough expect no quid pro quo…

Then subsequently, Mr. Y is found to be a nefarious character and the politician gives the money back as if that act restores his/her character.

Well maybe the character is saved, but haven’t you, Mr./Ms. Politician proven that in an organization you run and control, that you have a loose, sloppy ship. Now why, again, should we trust you with the public largess or to make decisions for us?

But, Sin, people do....all is forgiven and forgotten as soon as Mr Politician is running for office and promising tax cuts, educational reform etc.

People are more naive and foolish as Mr. Politician.

Yes. Your excellent point being that the whole system, from top to bottom, is based on bribery.

And yet, we are taught that bribery is illegal.

No wonder Bill parsed "is..."

Bernie Ecclestone gives New Labour £1M in an effort to halt the ban on tobacco advertising in Formula 1 racing

New Labour exempts Formaula 1, among other sports, from the ban on tobacco advertising

The story gets out

New Labour give back the £1M

The ban on advertising remains :D Bernie got what he wanted for nothing!

I could name about four or five other incidents of people giving money to New Labour and getting some huge financial reward later on...

With the Tories it was just sex... now its greed

Bloody politicians

That pre supposes that everyone always practices full disclosure.

That's a wonderful theory, but its a lot like saying that the United States Army shopuld never have admitted Tim McVeigh because he was GOING to eventually become the Oklahoma Bomber.

People are only what they want you to think they aret. For instance, there are organizations that we all give money to that may or may not agree/approve of our presence at Lit. However, there is no place that we are required to list the source of the funds we donate or explain our personal ethics or morality. If subsequently, these things are brought to light and the organization or individual disagrees with the way we live our lives, returning our contributions is their way of saying that they would prefer not to transact with us.

Would you be willing to answer questions about every aspect of your life every time you made a donation in order for a person or individual to feel comfortable accepting money from you? Because the questioning would have to be exhaustive - what's acceptable today may not be so tomorrow, so you'd have to be willing to answer questions about EVERYTHING in order to make sure that there is not a potential conflict down the line...

Starblayde LOL

Bob. That's my point. Why give it back?

Unless you CAN be bought...

Good point.

Then again, looking for a lucid explanation in anything Gray Davis does is a lot like looking for for logic from Jerry Brown...
