What is "flame"

What do people mean when they use the word "Flame" in forums? Does it mean ranting or having gripes against other users

Flaming can be like a pigpile fight .... one person makes a comment and it isn't the popular opinion etc and then that person will get 'flamed'... like a back ally fight.

It's annoying - very annoying.
