I was just wondering because I am pretty new here and wondered if what I had was considered good or not? Just an abstract question. :) Thanks

Well, to get that little H by your story, you have to have at least ten votes with an average score of 4.50 or better. To me, that is the threshold where I'm happy with the score.

On some of my more controversial essays, I'm satisfied if the score doesn't fall below a 4.00, but then, I expect to be slammed with those, most of the time.

What's Good?

I don't think it matters what the rating is. Some will love your product, some will hate it. There is (in my opinion, and I've seen other people post this opinion as well) a group of people that post negative feedback because they disagree with the content of the story (very prevalent in loving wives), so does that take away from my joy at what I have written? No.

To me, I really look for written feedback to see what people think, and then my most important audience of all, my wifey. I think everybody has to find that comfort zone where they know they are happy with what they have produced. It's fun, not a contest...unless you enter the contest...then it's war!

There are many good sstories between 4.00 and 4.50. I have had a few fall below 4.00, and can not tell what makes them different from the ones that are over 4.50, so there is a degree of randomness.

I think a novice writer should hope to improve their score over their first 10 stories, and then be prepared for fluctation from story to story.

Good question. There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern to the voting. I have very positive feedback on a couple of stories where the voting is less than 4.5.

Have two stories in Incest/Taboo where there is lots of taboo and incest overtones but no incest. Ch. 01 is over 4.5, but Ch.02 is slightly less even though I thought it was hotter than 01. Think the reason is I made the readers mad when they realized there would be no incest.

I'm happy with anything over a 3.5 but I prefer reviews instead of scores. Private or public, reviews are what get me to actually write the next chapter.

Sincere, glowing feedback is far better than some number between one and five. Has been, always will be.

so true.

the 'H' is a boost, but i have found that what i consider to be my best to date didn't reach the requisite 4.50 (4.45, but not the 'H'). other stuff, which i think of as dire, has done very well, 4.76-4.83, so there's no real formula. flawed ethics has it right to a degree, in my view, just enjoy doing it, take the feedback and grow. there'll be a few detractors along the way, live with it if possible, easier said than done for me, but i'm gettin' better (twitch).

Five is the perfect score?

Is it?

Hell no! By all means strive for something reasonably high, say an average of 4.00 or better, but remember, your score is more an indication of popularity rather than quality. Your subject matter may not be to the taste of the majority of your readers, but still be a wonderful, flowing example of the literary art. How many of the classics would have been abandoned, had the authors been receiving votes on each chapter?. Feedback, even negative feedback, is far more valuable! So don't let a low score put you off!

Kind regards,
Angelique

am I the only one who finds it frustrating to have numerous stories hovering just below 4.50? I know that a lot of readers will look first, and perhaps only, at "H" stories, so I fear that they are missing out, and that I am losing potentially desirable readers.

hovering? oh God, yeah. several, just below! frustrating ain't it.
Angelique, popularity and quality are probably relative. i've submitted to varying categories and have evolved over a period of time. popularity is earned, but that's just my opinion.

A good score depends entierly upon you the author. Some folks aren't happy with anything less than an H. Some are disappoined they don't have E's on a work. Some are happy as loong as they score better than 3, which is the median.

The average is probably higher, because few stories rate a one, but as a rule of thumb, some folks are cool with anything above the median as it is, theoretically , better than average.

I went through this when I first started here. For me it comes down to, as most of the posts have indicated, what you feel comfortable with.

And for myself, I enjoy the feedback most of all - especially if the author of the feedback gives insight into why they believed it is good (or bad). Or even where in your story they were struggling with. ("What may seem like logical steps in your stories to you may not be so in the public's eye.")

Different people, different authors, different styles and, most definitely, readers of different likes are encountered here.

I have had great ratings on stories where I have received the most horrific response in feedback that my story stunk to high heaven. And the opposite is also true, bad ratings but great feedback on how the story shivers down to the generations to come. ~shrug~ I cannot figure it out.

I hope this note along with the others help you. Help you in the sense that whatever ratings you get and whatever feedback you receive, it should not discourage you from writing.

(Now, if I can only get over this writier's block.)

(Wait, I'm not a writer. -- phew.)
