BDSM is the initials of a loosely grouped, related group of "kinks:"

BD - Bondage & Discipline
DS - Dominance/submission
SM - Sadism/Masochism

The overlaps (second D, second S) are deleted for the sake of "elegance" - BDDSSM would be awkward, whereas BDSM is not. Some people think there should be a final S (BDSMS) to add

MS - Master/slave,

but most appear to be satisfied to include that as a subset of D/s.
