What is a low story rating?

I know 'Votes' don't matter, feedback matters.

After 80+ votes the rating don't change much per vote. So it takes several low votes to get a low score.

I have this story and I personally think it is kind of crappy. None the less it is posted on Lit. I know the stories over 4.5 are a decent score. I believe the stories over 4 are still ok.
Then I have this crappy 3.87 story I keep hesitating to revise it.

Obviously a 2 rating would be a poor story no doubt. I am being serious when I ask at what range is poor and good/ok differentiated?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is a 3 up to 3.9 considered OK? What seems to be par for the course?
I don't think there are any 1s or 2s, nor 5s out there so my thoughts are 3 is the lowest really on the rating scale 4.25 is average, 4.5 and above are really good.
The top stories are getting 4.90 after 60 or more votes. The lowest I could find was this little gem with 1.79 after 19 votes.
I often tend to agree with the rating of stories when I browse the lists. Anything between 3.50 and 4.00 is pretty decently written piece, but doesn't often manage to engage. 4 and up hides the gems, but as I don't really look for the most fuck per square inch when I read, it's not always the H marks and the top scorers that I find to be the best stories.
That little gem is listed in the TOP LIST of Erotic Horror just one place below my White Scut. I did send some suggestions to the author but being bottom of a top list is an achievement to savour.
LOL
I wonder how much they appreciated this?
I heard that if you want to get on the top list, this is the category to write for, so as soon as I come up with a story line, watch out Ogg, you may be third last on the list :D
Low scores really depend on you. If you have 7 stories posed and 6 are at 4.5 and above and one is at 4.0 you will be wondering what you did wrong with it. While someone else may have 4 posted and not even have a 4.0.
In an odd numered ranking system you just take the middle and asume it's median. This is probably not the case, but it is better than taking all the stories in a category and averageing them, you would still get a very subjective number.
I would guess most categories willbe top heavy, with more above 4 than below 2. In the end you are the final arbiter on what is average for you and what is good.
I posted a story that was not the usual for me, and it's lower than average . . . I blame it on, when fans are happy with your work, they get a bit disappointed when posting something out of your usual . . . such is life. Plus, well, I've read a story or two that are up there on the top list, and well, they seem not so great, and not well-edited . . . go figure. But that's just my humble opinion. I'm sure there are also some very worthy pieces that have been overlooked . . .
I think I said this on another thread? Jesus, repeating myself now :) Has it come to that.
VEDDY IN-TE-RESTING, but strange
Phildo,
Somehow you managed to get me thinking about ratios. Don't laugh, it beats the hell out of the IRS form 1040.
I did a little quick, informal check of the top lists. There's a surprising amount of consistency in the scoring.
While some categories such as Erotic Horror and Humor tend to run low (go figure), about 25% of the stories appear to have a score around the 4.5 range.
Using categories with less than a 1000 entries for a yardstick, it would seem that about 66% of the stories rate 4.0 or higher.
Of course, those are wild assumptions based on shaky data computed by an erring mind.
Just another fine service of No Hope Enterprises.
I have one story in the 3.80-ish range.
It's a bit of departure from my usual; lots of BDSM punishment with anger and sex happens only at the end of the story.
Personally I like it because I feel it is more powerful, more emotional than other things I've submitted.
However, the stroke readers apparently didn't approve.
;)
Stories with 4.0+ are pretty decent? Whohoo, I always thought they sucked.
Grumpy,
Poetry is in its own world when it comes to scores. There have been about 16000 poems submitted to Lit. The top 100 list ends at 4.55. That's so low it's brutal. You poets are tough critics. I'm a bleeder, so I'll stick to prose.
Thanks, I need that!
But I guess I will just keep at the way I do it. I do it to ...."Quiet the voices in my head" . So the ones out side ( that mean to help at least). Are taken for just what they are.....
hiya
i just took an average of my stories, but as i only have one posted it didn't take long, giggle:D
it's at 4.20 with 99 votes and 43,003 views, 6 public comments, and about 45 feedback emails in my mail box. some lovely comments too, and some rather interesting proposals:devil: :D
seems good enough to me for a dippy housewife with three kids and a home to run as well.
don't know how my old man's stories are doing, he never bothers to check them.
i'd say 3.50 and above is good enough, below that i'd worry.
I read each post here and I know it is almost a interpitation of each person and how the rest of his/hers stories are doing.
Which I want to thank everyone for taking the moment to reply.
The vote generally means very little to me compared to the average feedback, I recieve on a particular story.
It is hard to imagine but I have a tie with very many comments from "Really your story sucks so bad don't ever write again." to "The story is the most awesome story ever can you please please email me when you write part two. I'll be your best friend."
I have been perplexed over this story that I even asked fellow Lit authors to give me an opinion. I seldom will ask and never promote my stories.
If I had a story at 1.76 it would not be a question I would pull it!
One of the problems with the story is Grammar. I on purpose left it fair other than MS Word corections for spelling it was posted in raw form. The intention was it comes off like it is a real story from an average Joe spilling his guts out to the world and not a professional writer.
LOL I am not professional!
But in most cases this really sells the story hard and fast and is a wicked pisser for feedback. So I am stumped. I guess I will let it sit longer and watch what happens.
Thanks all,
Phil
Concerning the ratings system.
Is is just me, or would it be cool to have lots of graphs and statistics and such? Also, I think it would be better to have %ge points, so we could work out a story's quality more precisely.
And what about ranking stories on different variables? For example, most read, most popular author, number of pages etc etc
Yeao that would be more understandable!
That would be awesome!
Not likely it will happen as it is a bit more complex and much more work is intailed for Laurel. You can try suggesting it as she loves suggestions to improve Lit. Just drop Laurel a PM she does read them.
I haven't pulled "White Scut" because I think it is a valid story, as is my other low rated erotic horror "Donna".
Whether they are Literotica stories? No. They're not.
Leaving them posted is a reminder that I can get the intended audience wrong. Some actually appreciated "Donna" as horror but not the sort of horror they wanted.
Actually, there have been some changes over the years -- adding a top views listing as well a top scores listing is just one of the changes.
Most of the work involved is for the programmer who does the custom scripts that drive the stories archive and that takes a lot of time to get changes implemented.
As far as the original question, the answer is obvious to me -- since I'm clearly the greatest author the world has ever seen, anything under a 5.10 is an insult -- never mind that 5.00 is a perfect score, I'm better than that!
In actual fact, I haven't bothered to log-in as "Dirty Old Man" for over a year and have no idea what my current scores are -- and don't really care. A good score is an ego boost, but it's not why I posted the stories in the first place and doesn't change MY opinion of them and it's my opinion that really counts.
