What is a fanny?

Recently I posted an anal story in which the participants referred to her rear end or butt as her "fanny". To me, this is a more genteel way of saying her "ass". I got a very nice but anonymous feedback pointing out that only in the US does "fanny" have that meaning. Most other places it means the same as "pussy". Is this right? I haven't heard that meaning before.

That was in dialogue, by the way. In narrative, I always say ass, frequently preceded by a complimentary adjective, such as comely, shapely or voluptuous.

I've heard that . . . Lucy Lawless was once trying to explain to Letterman what a "Fanny Pack" would mean in Australia, and the implied location of fanny was pointed out. It wasn't the butt.

I have read a few stories on Lit, can't remember which, that used the word fanny for a womans pussy. When I was reading it didn't seem quite right at first, took a minute to figure what was going on.

It was a role-playing story and the woman was harking back to her days as an 18 year old high school senior and cheer leader. It probably would have been about twenty years earlier.

Now that I think of it, I don't recall hearing the word on TV, except for fanny pack, for a long time. People say "ass" or, if they want to be less crude, they say "butt". I think it would have been appropriate twenty years ago, though.

When I was very young and first read "The Hobbit," I didn't know that what we call suspenders are called braces in England. I only knew braces for teeth. When Bilbo hooks his thumbs in his braces and blows smoke rings, I had the oddest image of an unpleasant orthodontic action.

In the future, I guess I'll refrain from using "fanny" unless one of my characters is named Fanny.

I remember in the play and movie, "Funny Girl" the story of the comedienne, Fanny Brice, she was going to Broadway and her boyfriend was worried about losing her affection. He was holding her and said something like "I'm afraid someone will want to hug my Fanny and kiss my Fanny".

I'm loathe to repeat threads and 'cross-cultural discussions' that I know have gone on before...but more and more, it seems to me that there is a genuine need for an interpretation thread on AH, maybe one for the Archive Tread.

And before I get shouted down, I mean it purely in the interests of writing, and in order to avoid confusion.

The posts on here, alone have shown that when we write something, we may not be writing what we think, to a reader in another country.
