What is a dishonest mistake?

I was with some friends earlier and one of them said from the stage, "Oh that was an honest mistake."

OK. I buy that. But if there are honest mistakes, then surely there must be dishonest mistakes. But think about it. A mistake is an accident. If an accident happens then an accident happens. Honest mistake.

But if it is a dishonest mistake, then how can it be an accident? In which case, it really isn't a mistake. So if it isn't a mistake, then how can it be called a dishonest mistake?

I make a lot of honest mistakes. I don't think I ever made a dishonest mistake.

Or maybe you can sort it out for me.

oh I thought you would remain single.

Clear?

Where is the dishonesty in the latter mistake? I don't get it.

Well, there is a difference between a mistake and the "guise" of a mistake.

It is then no kind of mistake. What you describe sounds more like a non-mistake or anti-mistake.

mistake

1 : to blunder in the choice of <mistook her way in the dark>
2 a : to misunderstand the meaning or intention of : MISINTERPRET <don't mistake me, I mean exactly what I said> b : to make a wrong judgment of the character or ability of
3 : to identify wrongly : confuse with another <I mistook him for his brother>
intransitive senses : to be wrong

Add honest or dishonest to that as an adjective and it is pretty clear, but if you want more, I would say an honest mistake is where you innocently assumed something, a "dishonest mistake" would be where you made an error in judgement with bad intentions, malice or prejudice.

A couple of examples; people who don't know my gender often assume from my name that I am female since my first name's spelling seems feminine to them (it is a unisex name often with different spellings for male and female in the US). That is an honest mistake.

Now let's say someone came out of the blue, and without introduction or getting to know anybody, assumed that because some women here are a writers of erotica, or because they frequent an erotica site, that they are all whores. That is a dishonest mistake.

A real life example; Pacific Blue's recent experience with a scumbag who assumed that because she was looking for love, that she was someone he could take advantage of. That is a dishonest mistake.

Yayati, DateRape, Redwave - all dishonest mistakes.

I don't think of mistakes as accidents, I think of them as, something you thought would work but didn't.

An honest mistake:

"I'm sorry, I didn't know that was your wallet".

A dishonest mistake:

"I'm sorry, I knew that was your wallet, but thought I could take it without you noticing".

I once lied about something which seemed inconsequential at the time. By the time it became important it was too late to tell the truth. I was trapped! Could that be classified as a dishonest mistake?

A mistake is a mistake regardless of how you look at it. Anything else is lying stealing or whatever. Just my opinion of course.

honest mistake: sorry about that honey, I thought you already had an orgasm (when her moaning was really groans over your lack of ability)

dishonest mistake: sorry about that honey, I thought you already had an orgasm (when you know her moaning is out of frustration and you just did not give a damn, cumming anyways :D )

I think that an honest mistake is a clearly unintentional accident. You are driving down the road, and a kid runs out from between 2 cars and you hit them.

Maybe "careless mistake" is more what you mean - one that you didn't try very hard to avoid. Driving drunk and running a red light and ramming a car.

My husband hates when he says "but I didn't do it on purpose!!!" and I respond with "but you didn't try hard enough NOT to!!!"

My ex-wife used to say that all the time too (she didn't mean to do it) - so often that you would think she would get a clue.

My response was usually "maybe not, but you succeeded so well that the results are just as bad", or some variation thereof - but I like yours better.

An honest mistake would be the first time you do something wrong without knowing....,"Gee officer, I didn't know we were required to wear seatbelts by law! Please don't give me a ticket!"

Dishonest mistakes would be doing something you know is wrong on accident. *mental note...oh crap I forgot to wear my seatbelt today!* "Gee officer, I didn't know we were required to wear seatbelts by law! Please don't give me a ticket!"

BOTH of those sound just plain dishonest - where's the mistake?

Maybe you think a mistake is choosing to do something that you know is wrong, and it TURNED OUT to be a mistake because you got caught.

As in, "fucking the babysitter turned out to be a huge mistake."

A mistake is a mistake. Honesty doesn't play into it at all.

I am eliminating this particular character string from my idiom, unless I am being sarcastic, which can often times play a significant role in my communications and verbal gymnastics.

It was just an interesting conversation I wanted to share with you. :)

Thass no mistake.
