What inspires you, folks? Is it a person, an action, a song, a view? What causes you to rush to your computer and write?

I was inspired twice today, truly inspired. First by a song, "Leaving On A Jet Plane" sung by Bjork, second by giving my boyfriend head <giggle>

Howabout you?

I have an incredibly dirty mind..

And an imagination that goes wild at the drop of a thought. Also, I get a lot of requests to write tailored stories. I never turn down requests to write a story when asked. Thus I get to use other peoples imaginations as well. But what inspires me to write? If I had to pin it down, I'd say life.

well my latest scribbling was actually inspired by an episode of buffy the vampire slayer (Eeek should i admit this) though don't worry folks its not a work of fan fiction or of vampires evil doings, its all about beingf invisible actually*L*

"spank" was inspired by a dream

"double the pleasure" by my husbands fantasy

"when a woman's watched" having sex in the living room with the curtains open!

so there..lots of things inspire me!

My latest was inspired by an incredibly vivid dream which seemed to stick in my mind until it was written down.
I'm usually inspired by situations, or memories of those times of life where everything swirls and blends.
I think many erotic stories are inspired by a persons fantasies, sometimes those they may unable to ever fulfill and therefore take pleasure in creating.

Was the episode Out of Sight, Out of Mind or Gone?

I sometimes get inspired by listening to certain songs, but mainly through looking out a window at either the sky or people passing by. Wondering where they're off to usually gets me imagining.

I don't rush to the computer though, i tend to mull things over in my head first. :)

fiery jack..no idea*L* it's the one where the arch nemesisisisisesss fire the invisibility ray by accident at her....the bit of actual inspiration was her visiting spike.....caught my imagination!

I too am a muller, my stories get played out in my head before i even contemplate recording them.

What inspires me? What DOESN'T inspire me?

Song titles, song lyrics, unusual words in my dictionary, a scene in a film or a TV-program, gossip on the street, personal experiences, people I meet in town...

Inspiration........

Fun question....(I like these).

Like everyone's already mentioned, inspiration comes from a variety of venues. Dreams, thoughts, emotions...they all trigger an idea for a story. Which is one of the reasons I carry a tape recorder with me much of the time. I often get a thought, or a "line" that I like. And at 51...the old memory isn't what it once was, so I quickly record those impressions lest I forget. <smile>

I just finished a new story which is pending called "The girl of his dreams" which was inspired by a song I heard playing on the radio. "Last Kiss" by Jay Frank Wilson and the cavaliers. (Yeah..it's a golden oldie) and one in which I hadn't heard in years.

Because of that, I wrote my first "Romance" category story. And though many who might read it will see it to be totally different than anything I've written so far, (lots of implied...suggested sex) with very little down and dirty tearing the sheets to shreds sex, I think it's a tenderly delightful story. Hence...it will probably bomb. LOL.

I do from time to time write stories at the suggestion of someone though I don't normally take requests to do so. But once an idea comes to me, (like this last one did) I can't let it go until I've put an outline together at least, copied my notes and locked myself away inside my sanity room where I can write and write and write.

I remain,

I get ideas from memories, situations in which I find myself, and people who stand out for some reason. The inspiration to write usually results from asking myself "why" or "what if" about these memories, situations and people, and letting my mind ramble to fill in the answer. When something seems to click, it almost writes itself, and I usually can't stop until it's finished.

The archetypical "What if" reflex gets most of mine. That and beautiful women. And my overactive libido. And my twisted imagination.

Could be anything really :D.

The Earl

I'm pretty much the same as ronde and Earl. I think about people I know and situations that could have occured or did occur to some degree. I then let my mind take over with the "what if's". I outline it until I feel like the story works. Then I write until I feel like I have a story completed. I'm like ronde in that it just flows from my mind with little effort. For me it seems because it is about people I'm quite familiar with and I can have alot of fun with the situations I want to put them in.

I have this problem. When inspiration strikes, if I don't write it RIGHT THEN, it's gone for good.

Anyone else have those experiences? How do you keep it in mind until you have the chance to get it out on paper/in comp?

true confessions

Great thread, Chicklet!

Here's a really raw admission: some of them are straight from my self-fulfilling sessions  (how's that for a euphemism) I figure if it got me off it may work for someone else. :D

Some are from real life. In that case, I know that the situation did get someone off.

My last one started as a sex scene and then grew into its own story.

One I am working on now is partially inspired by a friend's life.

As far as whether I have to write immediately, usually I spend a bunch of time working and re-working ;) the plot, so I don't lose the thread easily.

That'll be Gone then, though the part where Buffy yelps as Spike finishes his "exercises" had me laughing rather than thinking. :D

Has all this been in the few days since the episode was shown on the beeb?

I try to think of the actual lines, try to see the story as a film in my head, and think about it over and over again, too keep it in my head.

When I sit down to write, no-one must interrupt me, or the flow will be destroyed, and never get as good again. A drunkard on the bus interrupted my writing yesterday - I killed him with my eyes over and over and over again.

That felt good.

Like everyone else, I think I get inspired by a variety of things. I think it is moods that really make me write, or at least, dictate the type of story I'm writing. Sitting on the beach, cooking a meal for my fiance, etc will lead me to write cheesy romantic stuff. Too much time swimming, running or in the gym tends to lead to "strokers" (I don't understand that one myself. Breathlessness? Laziness? Temporary obsession with the physical? I don't know).

For non-erotic stories, the best thing can be to watch a film, not for the plot but for the mood. I'm not much of a film person, but there are a few films out there that are guaranteed to make me feel a certain way, some of which I'm quite ashamed of watching repeatedly:

1. Forrest Gump (More or less any emotion. Now I have it on DVD, I don't have to watch it all afternoon, either).
2. He Got Game, a Spike Lee "joint," which you should all watch. The only film I've ever seen which is truly uplifting without resorting to sentimentality, pity, or a sickly sweet happy ending.
3. Free Willy. I'm sorry. Sometimes only cheese will do.
4. Hot Shots/Naked Gun. Not only hysterically funny, but obsessed with detail, too.

I could carry on, but I douby anyone is listening anymore. I hope at least one of you knows what I'm talking about, and maybe even feels the same need to be prompted by outside sources to feel in a useful mood to write.

I have a related problem, in that I'm often inspired to begin a story, only to lose that inspiration a day or two into the writing process.

I'm going to buy a small micro-cassette (or a digital equivalent) recorder for the purpose of being able to continue "writing" the second that inspiration returns ... even if I'm half asleep in a pitch black room.

The micro-cassette thing might work for Chicklett's problem too ...

interesting thread Chicklet :)

My initial reaction to your question Chicklet, is everything inspires me.

No matter what it is, I find I am constantly barraged with story ideas. You see, it only takes an image to get me writing. It could be something on my desk, The Penholder (in the writing). It could be a picture in a magazine, a place I've been, a poem, a challenge, an object... Anything at all, yep even a dream (though mine are mostly nightmares).

I find I have to physically shut down the mental capacity to receive the flow of ideas. Sometimes that's impossible.

I don't think I'll have enough time in my lifetime to write all the stories that come flying at me. But I'll give it a go ;)

fantasy?

Most of my erotic stories begin with a simple fantasy, but for me no fantasy is complete without a basic plot outline (if the science ain't right, I can't believe in it. So I make up the science too)

After that it seems like so much effort for a fantasy so I turn it into a story into my head, and work on it all day. I write non-erotic things too, but during a working day I can switch between mentally writing nine or ten different scenes or stories, then lose them forever. One thing I've learnt over the years is that while most 'artistic' works are irreplaceable, sometimes writing a scene in my head and forgetting it all by the time I get time to write it down can only add to my own creativity. After all, we all get better with practice, and this is 'free practice' in that it doesn't require me to put any physical time into it, only mental time.

I always keep a notepad handy in case I have a really good plot idea tho, I have several notepads stashed around my studio with illegible scribblings and plot-drafts that I've jotted down at unusual hours of the day.

I work on a technical support line which is really frustrating if I'm half-way thru mentally writing a story while fixing something, only for the phone to ring and destroy it. I have been thinking of taking up some part-time warehouse work for mental solitude as well as extra cash. I am most creative when my body is occupied and my brain is free to do what it wants ;-)

Like FJ and EL I think about my stories for a long time before comitting them to paper. Often this allows me to combine three or four separate scenes together to make one good story.

I find that during the winter I'm unable to write my main non-erotic stories but I can still write erotica. Perhaps it's easier to lose myself into erotica and forget the cold and darkness around me than it is with sci-fi?

When I do poetry...

I always keep a notepad handy

This may be the way to go Chicklet. I always keep a note book handy for poetry, lines, and words that strike me as useful, but that I might forget later. If driving, I can just pull over to the side, and jot the line down, then proceed. Then, when I have the time to do poetry, there it is.
