For all this time we've used the previous wonderful search engine design. Then I logged on the other day and saw this new one. What? What is this? Who in the world thought this was a good idea? One can find nothing much with this new search thingy. Hope this is a temporary thing.

This thread was started in the Author's Hangout asking for comments on the new search feature. You might want to chime in there regarding any shortcomings that you find.

In many respects, it's a lot better than the old search, which didn't allow the searching for words or phrases in the body of the story (the old search relied on key words provided by the author). It also does one thing very well that Google does not: return results in which the search words or phrases appear on different pages of a story. And the search database seems more complete that Google's. That is, I seem to get more results back.

Because it's still "beta," some of the more recent stories (less than a month old) won't appear in a search yet. Plus, there seems to be a bug where searching for words and phrases in which an apostrophe appears return no results. Check out the thread for other problems.

New Search

I have used the old search feature in he past and thought it worked very well. This new search is something that I do not care for. Can you go back to the old one?

What a silly backward move !!!

Why would anyone choose to alter the search stories engine for what we have now ? I can only assume that when we type in the verification signature, it's a usage counter and I can't see that it would be all that useful. Before I could easily choose the date of submissions and take note of the authors. Please... rectify this terrible situation.

Just a programming note: If you click the advanced search link, you can choose to search by keyword, which is how the old search worked.

Anyone with comments regarding the new search should make them in this thread (<< click here!), not in the one the one you're currently reading.
