Okay so I am in a nostalgic mood in the first place but... awhile back I was watching some kids and one of them was hitting the other with a toy to which I placed the condition "If you don't end that behavior you are losing the toy blah blah." Okay so the little deviant (of course) continued his behavior.

Intending to set him straight and demonstrate that I meant what I'd said... I followed through with my petty threat and acquired the toy. This of course went extremely unappreciated by the owner of said toy. The response was what got to me though. He said "Give me back my motorcycle mouse from Mars," or some such thing. It was only then that I looked down upon the hideous creature in my hand more closely. It was a toy rat with biker clothing and the ugliest face imaginable.

So, I couldn't help it, I doubled over laughing.
I realize there are amazing age discrepancies that exist here on the BB but I mean, they just did NOT have anything remotely close to that when I was a kid!
IN fact, suffice to say... as far as fictional (especially cartoon) charaters go.. in my humble opinion.. they just DON'T make 'em like they used to... not even close!

I was just wondering if anyone agrees?
I thought of a few cartoons that I sorely miss and would love to allow my own children view.

- THE SMURFS
- FRAGGLE ROCK
- HE MAN
- TRANSFORMERS
- ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS

(Hehe, anyone remember Nightrider.. wasn't that sooo cool? OH goodness.. better yet... The Bionic woman!! or Wonder Woman... come on ladies ... who else had the underwear set!?)

And oh so many more (sigh).....
They were so innocent back then....
Okay okay, my nostalgia bug is really hitting hard.
Anyone else want to share some of their fav. childhood shows?

Nothing makes me feel older than people discussing their favorite childhood cartoons. I remember all those in your list, Jade -- my little sister used to watch them.

Me, I had "Gigantor" ("Gigantor the Space Age Robot, He's at your command...") and "Kimba the White Lion" and "Marine Boy" and "Speed Racer" -- all the great anime from the 60s.

I even remember when Sesame Street first went on the air, back when Mr. Hooper ran the store and Maria was a serious babe (whom I finally met one night. She was a childhood idol of mine, and she was doing a show on Broadway with a friend of mine, so I got to meet her and ask all those questions I always wanted to know, like why does a small "l" look like a "1" and what do Oscar's feet look like?") And back then the theme song was sweeter, more lyrical, less grating "hip-hop" sounding.

My toys were all astronaut and soldier toys (anyone remember Major Matt Mason? I actually found a web site of all his space toys! God love the Internet.)

I watched "The Electric Company" with Morgan Freeman as "Easy Reader" and -- God I could go on and on.

I know all about what kids watch today, because I have kids. And there's a lot of good stuff, and a lot of crap, just like when we were young. Something my son loves though -- I rented some "Schoolhouse Rock" tapes, and he watches them all the time. The good things always stay good.

God, I remeber He-Man...with She-Ra (that's where "girl power" originated, I'm sure of it), and Skeletor. My cousin had a Skeletor action figure that if you hit the breastplate, it would rotate and he would "sustain damage". Hehe...I was just fascinated with that thing.

I used to LOVE Tom and Jerry-the cartoon, not the drink-and the ol' classic, Merry Melodies. I had an enourmous stuffed Tweety Bird. Okay, maybe it wasn't that big, but I was kid.

Dammit, Jade, you had to go and get me all misty eyed now, didn't you? Ahhh, to be a kid again.

Oh, if you want some great nostalgia, check out http://www.x-entertainment.com/ The first time I went there, I musta spend a good 2 hours lost in the land of my youth

BTW, does anyone remember "Garbage Pail Kids" trading cards? I must have had the whole set, much to the chagrin of my mother.

I remember my son watching He-Man & the Transformers & the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I still have all of his TMNT stuff. I LOVE Schoolhouse Rock & can still sing the Preamble to the Constitution. One of the funniest things I remember in high school, way back in '75 or '76, was my entire American History class singing the preamble. The teacher about had a stroke. Thanks for bringing backs some good memories.

Hey DCL, I love vintage anime. Speed racer kicks, and there was this show about koala bears from another planet I used to love..

But I digress.

As the young'un here, I should be more in touch with today's cartoon super-heroes.. But I'm not. I mean, I love Tenchi Muyo and Gundam Wing.. But what the hell is up with a cartoon show about NASCAR RACERS? *wrinkles nose in disgust*

Shows I loved when I was little include Fraggle Rock, Jem (I wanted to grow up to be Jem, I admit it), The Muppet Show, Thundercats, and My Little Ponies.

Shows I love now.. Batman TAS, Superman TAS, X-men.. All the great comic-book stuff. If you look beyond the crap like the biker rat from mars or whatever, there is actually some decent stuff.

I -loved- Reading Rainbow and Sesame street. My mother and I still run around shouting "AGUA!" when we're thirsty.

I LOVED Biker Mice from Mars!!!!! It was great!!!

Actually, I like all manner of cartoons. I'm especially fond of Men in Black and Pinky and the Brain.

Marvin the Martian . . . sigh. My Poster Boy, Boris Badenov.

I had most of the dialogue of the Fractured Fairy Tales memorized by the time I was twelve (which really dates me!)

I never miss Recess if I can help it, and freaked my lover out one Saturday when he woke up to find me eating my cereal -- in bed -- and watching cartoons. I told him we'd discuss it later; he was interrupting Men in Black.

The only thing that eventually stopped the bickering was a RoadRunner cartoon. He has a serious admiration for Wile E. Coyote; probably because he's an engineer.

(hand up in the air)

Yes I had the underware set and I wore it with pride. I remember all those things and wish they still had them for my kids. The toys I find now days are so wierd and ugly I don't know what kids see in them.(OMG did my parents think the same thing?)

I used to love Nightrider. And I still have a big thing fot those old Tom & Jerry Cartoons.

I can't believe I'm admitting this. But you know what I do friday nights when I got nothing to do?
I watch Timon and Pumba cartoon on the tv LOL

You know what I watch Saturday and Sunday mornings, while still coozy-farting under the covers?

Batman, Spiderman, Tom&Jerry, Fantastic Four and various Disney cartoons also.

And you know what......I kinda like it :)

This week's Entertainment Weekly has an interesting section on how jaded, rude, obnoxious, perverted and cruel our pop culture has become. Sure, our parents thought the same thing, but maybe they were right. But there was always a "here" and "there". "Here" they had Perry Como. "There" they had Elvis. "Here" they had "Love Story". "There" they had "Clockwork Orange".

Nowadays you don't seem to be able to see the "Here"s for the "There"s. EVERYBODY is pushing the envelope now. Not too many places to retreat. Even for kids. A columnist I read once made a case for how Wrestling has become, for all intents and purposes, pornography for children.

More and more I want to move back to New York, fill an apartment with books, and keep my porno in a box in the closet where it belongs. That way when I take it out I can enjoy it for the lacivious pleasure it is. Once porno (and by "porno" I mean all things adult, incluing exploitation, crudity and violence) becomes the norm, as it certainly seems like it is, how much goddamn fun will it be?

Back on topic -- I really, really, really liked "Zoom".

*throwing the bedroom tv right out the window*

There will be none of that in bed, thank you very much! :D

Got thinking about this the other day when I saw this guy who was "The Weird Kid" from elementary school. He used to think he WAS "Johnny Sacko's Flying Robot". Hes much better now....he thinks hes Ronnie Milsap.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned the Flintstones yet -
or their space-age counterparts, the Jetsons!

or what about Scooby-Doo!!
I recently read a convincing list of evidence that Shaggy and the gang were actually high all the time, which would explain a lot.

I really miss the Smurfs. We still get them here, but only in French. *sigh*

Aw Dixon... I am more and more growing to love you like a big brother (guess that means I should remove you from my original "fuck list?" lol)
I have never seen you hug anyone btw so I am going to hug you if you don't mind?((Dixon))

And btw Mister Smartie-pants I DO remember Mr. Hooper! Also LMAO about the "Maria story." You really asked her those questions or am I just gullable beyond belief? (eep)

Finally... WTF is with that new Sesame Street hip hop crap? (please excuse my language.. don't tell mom okay?)

Patryn:

SHE RA ... yeah baby!!
Did you watch He-Man too? I was just wondering b/c I will always love the Christmas episode where Skeletor has a change of heart and saves some kids' lives. It was so touching... (sigh)

Haven't visited that site yet 'cause I am at work and shouldn't even be here but... here I am...hehe.

AND HELL yes I remember G.P. kids!
My mother didn't allow me to have them but guess what? (hehe) Did you have the "twin sets and all that?) Remember the one with the kid who picked his nose and his finger was coming out the top ..? LOL!!! OH GOD!

TERASAF:

Ah the bonding of kids when we all know the song together!

ENDLESSLY:

LOVE that wording... "vintage anime." You are So awesome!

And Hey! I remember Gem all the way! ("Gem is truly outrageous truly truly truly outrageous Gem is my name no one else is the same, Gem is my name!" ) OMG ... please tell me I didn't just sing that? And wow who came up with those "crafty as hell" lyrics ya know?

Oh, and the Muppet Show,
Reading Rainbow, and S. Street ALL ruled!

I also watched the Polka Dot Door and Mister Rogers (yes I really did) when I was really little.

AGUA!!!

CREAMY:

You are one in a million honey!

HAHA you are with an engineer (holding back from the Dilbert jokes as I type) J/K.. hope he is keeping ya happy though!

BWL:

YA!!!!!!

(Doing the infamous swirl.. spinning round and round in time to the suave 70s disco sound...to demonstrate that I am in the WW club woo hoo... woah... I am too old for this now.. that made me dizzy).

Sorry.. promise I am NOT stupid.. just hokey.. there is a difference!

XANDER:

Alright! Did you want the car? Just admit you wanted the care and I will be happy. Did you did you?

ANGELIQUE:

You TELL em honey!
;)

EXPERTISE:

THAT was an intriguing little quip there... uh huh.

SALLYGIRL:

OMG I totally forgot about all of those... I ALWAYS watched the flintstones!
I wanted to BE Judy Jetson haha!

Hey, at least the theme song for the Smurfs is the same in any language! (LA la lalalala la lalalala)

But Of course Jade. I wanted that car. I wanted to drive around in Kit, so I could kick it's evil brother Kats' ass. :)

OMG I can't believe I can remember that.......*mental note* X'ie had no life until recently...

Originally posted by Jade LMAO about the "Maria story." You really asked her those questions or am I just gullable beyond belief? [/B]

I did meet, her, but I didn't actually ask her anything about Sesame Street. I was 16 and very much did not want to come off as a "geek".

Thanks for the hug.

By the way, did you know that there is actually no such word as "Gullible"? Jonathan Swift coined it in "Gulliver's Travels" to describe how people felt about Gulliver when he insisted his wild stories were true.

Gem.. now THAT was a superhero for chicks of the 80s. I mean, none of this mild-mannered reporter getting superpowers for us.. this was a mild-mannered charity worker turned ROCK STAR!

*secretly wanted to dye her hair pink in first grade*

Endlessy I can't believe you brought up Gem and the Holigrams!!!! That was one of my favorite shows.
Does anyone remember that cartoon Thundar the Barbarian, please someone say that they do or else, I'll feel like a total loser.

Damn it DCL now I really have to LOVE you as well as Adore you

:p

You know I forgot to mention and you will get a laugh out of this. My mother made me a wonder woman costume for halloween one year and she said when I put it on I really thought I was wonder woman. I leaped from house to house in my invisble plane. I even had the golden lasso.
Omg I am laughing about what a fool I must of looked like but damn it I had fun

Bonnie

ok A couple of things here....1 Jade i have one of those rats and play with it aT WORK......2 THE Jetson's and the fintstones were the shit , I too recall Mr Hopper ....What about the TV show Zoom?.....Zoooooooomm.......Zoommmmmmmmm.

And I live in the town of Latrobe Pa. This is where Mr Rogers was born and rasied , we have a block about a bloak away that looks just like what you see on tv. Shit like Fred Rogers Mothers maiden name was McFeeley ......we have McFeely way.....Rogers McFeely feild ......So how could we forget good old Fred Rogers.......Hey Arnold Parler also lives here even still today..... You can still run into both around town sometimes....

Bugs Bunny then and now, he is just way cool. Lance Link the chimp with a band and a girlfriend Mata Hari. Can't forget "Moose and Squirrel", I loved Bullwinkle. THose are the only ones I can remember sitting still for, I was a kind of hyper little kid. I thought Mr. Roger's was a dork even as a little child. Bugs was my man and all that cross dressing was facinating. Great Topic Jade!

HAD the underwear set? HAD.

Who are we kidding? I still have it.

Boots...outfit...bracelets. the whole she-bang!

See, I wear that and Bushido wears his Superman underoos and WHEW...its a night to remember! :)

This is so funny, I haven't laughed this much in ages. I had Baby Secret, one of the first talking baby dolls. I also had Dancerina & Growing Hair Velvet, dolls that I still have, very well loved & played with. I hadn't thought of Fractured Fairy Tales in years, I have got to watch more Cartoon Network. I must confess, however, that my absolute favorite show was "Dark Shadows". Was Jonathon Frid as Barnabas Collins tooooo sexy or what? I wanted to be Lara Parker as Angelique sooooooooo badly. She was a bad girl. I watch that show on Sci-Fi whenever I am home & laugh at how much it used to scare me. Another show I loved was Penelope Pitstop & the Wacky Racers, I am really showing my age, LOL.
