Do they hold an election or the next rung down gets the job?

There seems to be a lot of House members and Senators getting the rona. Maybe this is what mcdonald trump meant by draining the swamp?

A temporary is appointed to fill out the term. Crazy Blondie Bimbo in Georgia got in that way as I recall. One in Missouri too a few years back. His wife was appointed.

Edit ... no the Blonde got in after a resignation.

The governor of the state appoints a temporary fill-in. That's why some current Democratic senators, like Elizabeth Warren, aren't being considered for cabinet posts. If the governor of their state is Republican (which is the case in Warren's situation), they'll appoint a Republican.

It depends on which politicval party he/she is.

If Republican there is a nationwide party and celebrations and church services condemning his evil soul to perpetual perdition.

If Democrat there is deep mourning and nationwide grief and church services praying for his/her delivery to heaven and the right hand of God where he/she belongs.

If independent, well nobody really gives a fuck.

Some states require that the replacement be the same party as the departed senator. However, I don't believe Massachusetts is among those, so Sen. Warren is staying where she is.

I think John McCain was the latest Senator to die in office. His seat was filled by Jon Kyl, on appointment of the governor.

In Arizona, there is a specific law mandating that newly appointed Senators must belong to the same party as the Senators they replace. Just an FYI.

Ergo, if Senator Sinema stepped down now, she would be replaced by a real Democrat this time.
