I have a 15 yr old dog with very bad arthritis. She can't go up and down stairs anymore, so I have to carry all 47lbs of her. She usually has to go out at night at least twice...and I have to carry her down the steps of my deck.....and then back up. She has become increasingly picky about her food, so I have become quite the chef for canines. It's like caring for an elderly relative. Right now, I'd be hard pressed to say what the old girl is good for. But I love her, and as long as she needs me, I'll be there for her.

I have an elderly friend, various-forms-of-cancer survivor (the doctors have predicted his imminent death several times over the years), who really, really, really loves his little Italian greyhound, who is a Crohn's Disease survivor (the vet never expected her to live this long). I'm convinced they're keeping each other alive.
