So it was in Clearwater, a city of 110,000 that is now Scientology’s international headquarters. County records show that the church owns 66 properties in the city, where an estimated 12,000 Scientologists live. City officials have long grappled with fears that the church’s influence was growing too deep.

All that came to a head last month, when the city of Clearwater went head to head with the church in a struggle over a strategically located parcel of vacant land. The city won, despite offering vastly less than the church was willing to pay. But the repercussions shook City Hall and the highest levels of the church, which has a reputation for sharp elbows and for winning at any cost.

Was the battle for this parcel of land an indication of the church’s unspoken intent to consolidate political power in Clearwater? Residents wondered. Conspiracy theories are nothing new when it comes to the Church of Scientology.

I fear any one group coming into power over others. Usually people/institutions turn into assholes as soon as they taste it.

Scientologists aren't known for cutting off heads or blowing people up and are generally good for the economy. :)

They play a lot of profitable games with manipulating banks. I can just imagine if they get a hold of a municipal treasury and can issue bonds.

There used to be a bar down town called The Judge's Chamber. It smelled like gin and stale cigars. If you wanted to fuck a judge, it was the place to go. :)

Neither. I dislike ISIS for obvious reasons.

I dislike Scientology because it's just spooky. I don't worry about them because I'm not rich.

Neither. I am proficient in the use of my defenses should either come knocking on my little drawbridge.
Fear is a shackle. Shackles have their place, just not on me.:D

That in 2017, vast numbers of people still believe in fantasy beings watching over us day and night, is more disturbing.

Neither .
The person I fear most at the moment is DJT ,one tiny finger from the end of the world .

world is a better place without either. They pretty much treat women the same.

Speaking of which...I just watched a Katie Holmes movie, starring and directing. She looks rode hard and put away wet. :)

well when you were kidnapped by a horse toothed moron who should have his balls removed and fed to him, that can happen.

Hey...Kelly Preston still looks good and her emeter scores are off the charts. She's Operating Thetan Level Seven. :)

What scares me is the sheer number of morons who fall for the propaganda from either of them (and other cults too).

If you want to understand the allure of either, then I recommend Eric Hoffer's True Believer, an examination (sans judgement) of why people choose to believe. I don't hold it against anyone who choses to believe in something bigger than themselves, we are not all vested with the gnostic spark...

;)

We have many wonderful examples of this simplistic need to believe in something bigger than one's self in the bitter partisanship of our many threads touching upon politics, including the politics of terror. People cannot even bring themselves to give a fair reading of posts outside of their belief bubble.

Neither

I realize this is a non sequitur to the question but....I am more apprehensive that the U.S. and Russia each have about 7,000 nuclear warheads in service and available to be used. More than enough to erase the population of the planet. And who is watching the store....

Well, that's been true for decades and we've all learned to live with it. I'm more afraid of climate change because it will do damage and is a much harder problem to fix.

I haven't seen Katie in anything since she played Jackie Kennedy. Personally, I think Tom Cruise was a prick to her. She has had good reason to feel intimidated by Scientology. I think one day the true story on that will be told.

Haven't watched her in anything lately. John Travolta hasn't been in anything good the past few years. Except for maybe 'American Crime Story' I don't do cable, but I'll get around to seeing it some day.

Exactly how much trouble are you in it at home that you have to be keep doing this daily penance thing of yours?

Was it mostly the voting for Trump thing you are trying to erase with all of the blatant white-knight, virtue signaling, or she pissed about something else?

I've heard any Scientology-specific complaints about treatment of women. My (limited) understanding of their science fiction is that they beleivebwe are actually all genderless. That does not sound very patriarchal.

Daesh is not protected by hate speech laws or SJW. You don't even have hate speech laws.
