What does this mean?

I was online earlier today and a small blue square appeared with a magnifying glass moving around inside it. This seemed to be performing a 'search', but I have no idea why this appeared as I wasn't searching for anything on the Internet at the time. I couldn't get rid of this icon, so disconnected and logged back in. Any ideas?

Buggy Windows. Typical acting up that it does. Has it happened to you before, or was this the first time you have had it happen? Have you tried scanning for errors since it happened?

Sounds like your Windows was searching for a modem or connecting device. What did the text in the box say?

First time I've noticed it. I haven't scanned for errors yet, and there wasn't a text box - just a small blue square like I described. Doesn't seem to be anything to worry about then.

Sounds like you should check out a firewall to me. That could have been a hacker logged into your system anonymously and searching for personal information.

It may have been something innocuaous, like a webpage searching for an ActiveX control like Flash or Real player, but it could just as easily have been someone looking for your credit card numbers.

You've just been given some damn good advice there, I second every word WH said.

Maybe it's something to worry about after all? It's happened a couple of times today again. The box just stays there (it's only a square centimetre or two) and doesn't go away until I disconnect. I'd never seen it before, so thanks to all who have replied.
