I just submitted my 1st story. Hopefully the start of series. It is entitled, "Embarrassing". Before it is posted I would like to thank my editor. I lucked out first try.

:)

What about yours???

I can't edit my own stories for crap. VE are an invaluable resource, and those that I've gotten to help me in the past have more than earned my gratitude.

They're very patient fellows. :)

Mine's drunk the whole time. I think it's because between assignments I lock him away in the cupboard with the home brew and frankly, there's nothing else for him to do in there.

I signed up to be a VE. The few times that people have sent in stories to me for help I hope truly that I have helped them out. Heck though ya never can tell.

However... I volunteered because I truly believe that the VEs are there to help and more then 99% of the time are an invaluable resource.

Hi,
I'm kind of new here and pretty much brand-new at submitting stories. I mean, I just had two stories accepted and posted like two days ago but i'm not some expert in understanding everything at this site. I don't really know what volunteer editors are or do?
I'm guessing you don't need to have one to get published here right?
Is it like a resource that people can use if they want or need to?
I just was curious.

VE's are great. No you do not have to have one. They are a good impartial sounding board. They catch things that you would not. I did not take all of my VE's suggestions, but even those led me to ways to improve my story.

To get to Volunteer Editor go to "your" Control Panel. The same place that you submitted your story and there is a link to the list of VE's.

I will read all of your submissions and I hope that you will read mine.

My thought on the VE program is that something isn't right with it. I have volunteered I don't know how many times and never been placed on the list. Something wrong with me? I mean, hell, I have a college degree in English, am a published romance novelist and have done quite well with my stories at Lit. Someone want to tell me what the problem is? Apparently I didn't make the grade.

Sounds strange to me. I'd contact Laurel about it, if going through the listed means hasn't resulted in anything.

If you deal in Incest, I may have something for you down the road...

This probably sounds stupid, but have you checked? All my emails that have come through the editor program have wound up in my junk mail folder, and I don't like to think how many I missed :( I think this has a lot to do with why editors don't respond to people who approach them. Also, it took about 2 weeks for me to get approval, so it takes a while.

There is definitely something wrong with the VE software, and it's never worked right in the 15 months I've been posting at Lit. I signed up a bunch of times but it never registered me, and so I gave up on it.

The most efficacious way to offer your services as an editor seems to be to post a notice on the Editor's Forum board. People go there looking for editors, and you migt connect that way. That's the only way I was able to get clients to edit.

I don't offer my services anymore because I really don't have time to edit now, but the last time I looked the VE program simply wasn't working right. So it's not you.

I think you've got to love a complete stranger who is kind enough to read your work, in their own time, probably at the expense of their own writing time and come up up with intelligent comment and advice that really helps.

The rugged journey from unconsciously incompetent, through consciously incompetent, and on hopefully to consciously competent is indeed a little less lonely, with some good folks looking out for you along the way. (Try saying that fast!)

My sincere thanks to the generous and thorough Wishfulthinking, the insightful dr.M and for the encouraging and educational style of MaxSebastian.:rose: :rose: :rose:
