I'm, taking out a loan to get a new comp, tired of messing with this one. What would be the best yet cheapest pre-made comp out there?

You might try TigerDirect.com.
Dell is as good as any.

I mean, if cheap is the main criterion.

Good choice.

I've been buying Dell for the last 6 years (for work and home) and have never had a problem. Good machines

Mistress,

I truly like my Dell computer. I've not had any problems with it and it's very reliable. I was able to get what I wanted and needed and they were very cordial when it came time for me to order.

Good luck!

Good boxes, usually good support. FWIW, I just got another sales cat from them in the mail this morning. P4/1.7Ghz, 128Mb RAM, 20Gb HD, 17in monitor, preloaded XP - $999

Dell, Micron, Gateway (couple others) all seem to be about the same for service, computers, and support. I looked into financing my new computer thru dell and gateway. Bad idea. They really stick it to you with the interest. Best offer I got was like 14.5%. I get better than that on my credit card. I ended up making my own computer from scratch with the help of my officemate. I ended up saving over $1200 compared to a less than comparable high-end computer from gateway or dell. If you know anyone that can put together a computer for you and install the OS, I'd go that way. but that's just my opinion. :)

Good luck. You might try going to your local bank for a personal loan (9 or 10%) instead of financing it thru dell or gateway.

We have always had Dell computers... the best part has been the great technical support.

Dude, you're going to get a Dell.

I have problems with their commercials, but not the actual company.

Like I said I need pre-made! ;)

I cant put one together, and I dont have a boyfriend to do it for me! I think I'll go with the Dell......

I'll have to set up a meeting with my bank.

Dell-icous

Buy a Dell on one of those 0% intro rate credit cards and just move the balance in 6 months to another -- you'll save 100's.

Sounds like you're good to go Mistress :)

Good luck and I hope you like your new puter (they are like a new pet... lol)

You might consider looking on the Dell website and having a look at their refurbished computers. All of our desktops (1 workstation, 2 servers) are refurbished Dells and we've had hardly any problems. The videocard went out on one of the servers about a year later and they sent a replacement immediately, as well as a postage paid shipping label to send the defective part back. And they have the same warrantee on refurbished machines as they do new.

Refurbished cost more I believe if I looked at it right......

My daughter and her husband got a used Dell about a year ago and have been running it since with no problem other than running out of disk space. 'Course it only had a 10 GB drive (she downloaded a BUNCH of mp3's) and is a Pentium II to give you and idea how old it is.

But it does everything they need and they are happy with it.

Some years ago I had some jobs where we had to evaluate different computers to go with our products. So, I have looked inside and evaluated a lot of Dells, Gateways, Compaqs, IBMs, etc., and except for Apples I think the Dells are the best with regards to how they are put together modularly for easy access. Adding memory, etc. is very easy with the Dell, with only the Apple Macs being easier.

Gateways are the worst in that regards, and in the 486 days I had all kinds of problems with drivers and support. Compaq was about the same. IBMs were good but I haven't looked at one lately but I was always impressed with their modular design.

Overall I have had good luck with Dells.

My current computer is one where I chose the parts and had them put together by a local shop. An Asus MB, all name brand components, etc. - and it is okay, but I have had problems; I had an IBM hard drive go bad, the motherboard won't power down automatically like it should, and the Matrox video card went bad. The shop covered the repairs, all brand name components, but it was still a hassle and I lost everything I had on that hard drive.

I have seen Dells have problems too, as every computer brand does, but overall I like them. I recommend them to others.

If you want to put one together yourself you can save some money, but you also take something more of a risk in that I believe name brand computers have a wider exposure and therefore are better tested with various configurations of software and hardware.

Whatever computer you get, definitely get an NT based version of Windoze; Windows 2000 or XP - you will have much less problems.

I am using a Dell as we speak, it is a good computer! It took me about 2 weeks to tweek it to where I wanted things, but they have a good costomer service group if you need a problem fixed!

I would recommend a Dell, HP or Compaq !

The Bantam Dell Publishing Group has quite a few popular authors on their roster. I'd sign with them.

I have a Dell PC and Laptop. Both have been excellent...no problems. Beats the hell out of the Compaq I had before.

Mistress--

I have a Dell. Love it. I got all the bells and whistles. I have had no problems. For what I paid, I love the speed and memory. I asked around before purchasing it, and was told it was one of the best business machines on the market. If you're online like I am, and you need a reliable system(I do some freelance work from time to time), I'd recommend a Dell.

What I would not buy is an e-machine. I had constant problems, limited capabilities and I was unhappy with service and technical support.

Good luck.

Peace,

daughter

As a professional Systems Manager, I'd go with Dell too. Extremely good machines, top quality components, excellent service and backup, great warranties and up-to-date drivers on the Support sites. (OK We dont stock them so I'm not tooting their horn because I get a commission). They ARE the worlds leading retailer. I notice a lot are mentioning Compaq.
Compaqs are good, until it crashes or a component dies. Then you have to pay an arm and leg for another GENUINE Compaq replacement component. Their hardware is not standard so you cant wander into your local PC shop and buy a new part.

Go with the DELL, you wont regret it

Actually, now I might have the option of having one built if I can get ahold of a certain Wanderer to pick up the god damn phone and call me! :p

Punts Wanderer D! Wake the fuck up you dork!

Dell's quality is going downhill quick... At work, we've purchased 3 servers and had to replace parts in 2 of them in under a month's time... Out of 5 new workstations that are under a month old, one's already lost a hard drive and 2 others just started repeatedly rebooting....

I'd look for something else.
