Do you enjoy a certain type of foreign music, electronic, or simply the sound of silence?

While on the subject, is there any particular food or drink you consume while slipping into the mindset to write?

I'm a proghead (Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush etc) by nature and that works best for me when I'm writing. Love music playing when I'm writing. Right now I'm playing German prog with Subsignal while trying to bang out a couple more pages.

I used to munch while writing but as writing can be a very stagnant occupation I've learned that is not such a good idea weightwise- far better to get up every half hour and stretch and walk around the house.

Water or tea are my poisons when writing.

Often I write with my purring muse lying between my hands and keyboard (optimum position for petting.)

I enjoy white wine, I've gone through as much as three bottles in a four-hour span of writing. Strangely enough though it doesn't even get me a tad bit dizzy, but if I'm not writing then my fourth glass is the wall.

I like your song preference. I listen to a lot of Japanese Rock when I'm writing, but my favorite to listen to while writing erotica would have to be Shakira. There's just something about that voice that sparks naughty inspiration.

Back in my college days, thanks to anime and manga, I listened to quite a bit of Japanese rock and jazz - fun stuff. I seem to remember the music of Bubblegum Crisis being a writing favorite back then.

I need hard and heavy. Mettalica manson rob zombie slayer etc.

Pandora came up with a Halloween heavy metal station and I've been listening to that all night.

I function well in chaos and I think writing through screaming and crashing music reflects that.

That's Dream Theater or Symphony X for me.

I find my word count does increase listening to more aggressive music.

Usual Vibe

Metallica is my #1 band, I learned all the lyrics to 'The Unforgiven II' when I was 3 years old. I have different vibes for different music, but I'm still that awesome dad rolling down main street with Metallica and Ozzy blaring out of my minivan.

I have a playlist of low-key EDM that I listen to when I'm getting in the mood to write, but sometimes I just have to turn it off and keep my earbuds in to block out my boyfriend's noise.

Mostly the sound of silence. Even if I have something on when I start writing, I quickly tune it out and don't know if/when it stopped while I'm writing.

I find music to be a powerful way to express yourself. In my case a lot it ends up in my stories. If it's something romance related then maybe it's a romantic song that's inspired me to weite a scene.

Am currently working in a long Lesbian story where a straight woman begins to question herself by being with a woman. She breaks up with her lover only to later discover that she's really into women. Currently listening to Dare You to Move by Switchfoot for inspiration to write the gut wrenching breakup.

To what do I listen? To the music in my head and my fingers, usually. An instrument usually sits beside me as I work the ThinkPad in my lap, my legs stretched on my recliner couch. Every now and then I push the computer forward, pick up the axe, and play something. I make my own soundtrack.

Frankly, I prefer silence.
To me, music is a thing to be listened to, not treated like so much acoustic wallpaper.

That is awesome.

I tend to go with silence too, i think i might concentrate better if i listened to lyricless music, but i don't have a lot of it.

random side note: seeing as a lot of you are american does anyone like Ween? I'd like to give them a listen, but their discography is overwhelming me. Can anyone suggest a good album to start with?

I took my daughter to the twins of evil tour (manson and zombie) awhile back. Most 22 year olds don't want to hang out with their dad but she is my concert and horror movie buddy.

I went to a gig with my Dad just last week (Alabama shakes)

Saw Manson just a few weeks ago, and about 18 years ago. Unlike for Trent, time seems to have stood still for him.

Saw Zombie 9 months pregnant, 10 years ago. Awesome concert. Wish I could have moved a bit more...

Many years ago when juke boxes were everywhere, someone came out with a record that was completely blank. Three plays for a quarter and you got almost 10 minutes of silence. Still my favorite record.
