Was the only place to meet, greet, and get together at munches or through friends?

These days 3/4 of the folks you meet on the Net are wannabes, indecisive of what they want, or just full of *&*&. I guess its useful for the other 1/4, but just trying.

What do you all think?

Not going to touch your comment about wannabes, but I strongly recommened you read the thread in the cafe that talks about personal-ad site experiences. ;)

Before the net there were bbs's, some isolated, some, like fidonet, spanning countries, and before bbs's there were contact ads in newspapers and bondage magazines, sex phone party lines, general sexual get-togethers usually sponsored by swinging groups that the party pervs would go to and try to find each other, certain bars in town that became hangouts for the kinkily inclined, and also, just using your nose and paying attention to cues. People I know who found partners pre-net seemed to have no trouble at all doing so or spotting their "kind." Maybe our reliance on computer communications has dulled our natural ability to sniff out other kinky people in real life?

By most geeks' standards of internet, I can safely say the internet (in close to it's current form, at least as TCP/IP type of protocol) was invented before I was born (which is April 5th, 1983 for those of you who are curious. And ARPANET switched to TCP/IP in January of that year.) So my reply is...

What do you mean, before the internet?

Lol, I've had access to the internet since I was six, I don't know what was done before then. Quite frankly, I don't wanna know :D.

I'm with you on this one dude.

You either put an ad in a swingers paper or moved to a larger city that had a bdsm scene, most of the major cities do but it would take a while to find them. This was before newspapers put personal ads in the classified sections. Oh, usually the SM crowd would meet at some funky dance bar type of place on a thursday or something.

Correct. Someone I was close too used to hang out with one of the first guys who figured out a way to illicitly chat over ARPA back in the early 60s, but I suspect they mean before the Internet became (almost) as common as telephones. We take the net so for granted, but actually, if you think of the entire world population we net users are quite a (privledged???) minority.

Woah, young sprouts!

I'm mixed, having been an adult in pre-internet days. The net has made some things having to do with human communications much better but other things much worse.

When I started out in the late 80's munches and parties were pretty much it. Sometimes if you were brave enough to go through the classifieds you could find someone but more often than not, those didn't pan out much. I met my first Master quite by accident, but the others were word of mouth, through friends or munches. The net has been a wonderful way to connect with others over the years.

You are forgetting, some of us may have gotten INTO the S&M stuff because the internet was there to pique our interests.

I probably would have had *no* idea that fantasies of domination were OK without the internet. When you're a young kid who thinks about being in charge of a woman, you feel like you're going to be a rapist or something. It's nice to have these communities on the internet that teach you that it's all normal.

Absolutely! I couldn't agree more! I think I see this said a lot. To find like-minded individuals and to know you're not crazy, sick or otherwise considered insane (well okay there are those of us out there who might be...giggles) is a real blessing. I love the fact that there is this space on the web for us, to discuss what matters most in our hearts and to exchange ideas, lessons and tips.

Thrus the late 60's all thru the 70's it was snail mail invites as well as ph converstions. There were general invites that went thru the papers but you had to make voice or personal contact to get an invite.

We would take turns meeting at diffrent venues.

Snail mail, remember when you actually had to pick up a pen and write?

We were small groups and we met with other groups. We had several places that we could meet up and have events.

I'm with you on this one.

My first experience with the Internet is when I came (back) to this country in 1996. I've never looked back.

Pardon for asking this if you've answered it a million times, Marquis, where were you before? I love to hear about the places people have lived. :)

Totally my slant on things....found out I wasn't so abnormal after all :)

I have often wondered the same about the world before the vcr the microwave, or the video console. I like the answer of "I don't really want to know..." I do think it is interesting how the web has brought both a boon and a bane with its abilities to gather together like-minded individuals without their having to make much effort to 'get to' the location of the gathering. Yet...it seems this has caused an isolation effect of sorts...for no longer are people, seeking like minds to gather with, having to make such effort to attend these gatherings. A virtual world of togetherness, has thus created, it seems, a real world of isolation. But I become redundant here. Sorry for that...
