What Changes Have You Made?

Gas is now $4 a gallon. What adjustments have you made to your lifestyle?

god it cracks me up the way you yanks moan about the price of gas! :D

Relatively speaking its a bargain, but we're not rejoicing over here. You see your price is like a broken leg and our price is like an abcessed tooth. We appreciate that you have it worse than we do, but our pain is real. Besides, Limeys are the only damned people on the planet who rejoice when theyre hanged with a new rope.

I haven't made any changes. I use minimum gasoline anyway, since I live smack in the middle of town and don't work outside the home. I've been doing all my errands one day a week for years. I'm lazy like that.

Okay, I'll bite. How about your light bill and groceries; notice any changes in their cost?

Groceries have gone up some, but I still spend about the same amount. Light bill? No changes, really.

You have to remember, though, I live in one of the most affordable areas in the US.

I don't get why living in a place which has higher wages and lower living costs is real pain.

No changes. I bought a 35 mpg car over a year ago for work (I drive in my job), and it's still less than I was paying with my pickup when gas was $2.50. Some prices are up a bit, but we haven't really been hit yet, so it's just a little less I have every week. I'm trying to be a little smarter about what I spend so if costs on everything go up, I'll still be able to afford them (hopefully). More than anything I'm just a little nervous about where things are going. I am ready to buy my first house, but I'm not sure if I should. Between rising prices and the prospect of Obama getting elected (his tax increases would probably put my company out of business), I'm afraid to get in too deep.

No changes here. I have always worked hard to save money. I drive a car that gets 25 MPG City as well as the Motorcycle. (The bike is ridden most days, the car once or twice a week.)

Food prices have gone up some but not much. It hasn't changed the way I shop or the way I store food.

Electricity has not gone up but there are rumbles from the local provider about it going up. We shall see what happens.

I'm not complaining though, this may have a good effect for me. It may get some of the traffic off the roads.:D

Hmmmm well lets see...

I try to stretch a tank of gas now, instead of allowing myself to roam a bit, and have dropped from a tank a week to about 3/4 a tank for two weeks.

Go to the commissary for groceries, and cook more instead of quick take-out meals [yay for bar-b-que season]

TRB as a quick point though, you're also paying somewheres around 70% tax upon your fuel, combined with the fact that with the euro stronger than the dollar it took ya'll a bit longer to feel the pain.

JBJ, hadn't seen your new AV till now, very classy look, like it much better than the old one :)

*shrug*

I moved just prior to the last big jump to a more highway and shorter commute to work... the price jump hasn't affected me because of that.

I hate to tell Bush & Co though.... My girlfriend and I ARE the kind of people that keep the economy going because about 60% of our income is disposable... and we're shoring up in a wait-and-see pattern to see if does get to a level where it begins to ACTUALLY affect us.

When my girlfriend starts thinking about 'saving' money just in case... the american economy is in serious trouble!

We only drive when absolutely neccessary. Even then we take the more fuel effecient cars. We don't run the AC unless it's over 80. Luckily one of the cars is a convertable so that helps.

Long trips are down to zero this year.

On the utility end of it, all of our outdoor lighting is now solar powered. The AC is set at 80 degrees. We try to do most of the cooking on the grill. It's propane so no electricity. I've also turned the hot water heater down to 110. That's the lowest I will set it for now.

We have a Tundra, which gets 15 MPH, so we avoid using that if we can. We drive the Corolla instead. Also, we combine errands when we can. Our electric company is a local one, and the costs are very seasonal. We have just started using the AC, and I an dreading the next bill we get. Grocery prices don't seem to be all that much higher, but they are probably rising in small increments.

The last time I bought gas, it was $4.479 per gallon.
