I've probably been here for way to long to be asking rookie questions like this, but here goes.

I'm writing a Sci-fi/Fantasy heavy series. Naturally, you would think that I just answered my own question, but the MC is Transgender. Now, being unfamiliar with the Sci-Fi/Fantasy category, I don't know how well that would be received. I guess I could take the easy way out and just put it into the TS/CD category, but I was trying to broaden my reach a little by expanding into another category.

So, my questions. How bad will I get slammed if I put a TS lead story into the Sci-Fi/Fantasy section? Should I even worry about it?

Any thoughts are welcome.

50/50

I don't think you'll be slammed but either way, you should have a preface or a 'warning' for the gentle readers.

If you go Sci-Fi, let them know with a little "Hey, gang, we got some hot TS/CD action happening in here, heads up!"

I've posted in Sci-Fi and it is unlikely it'll reach more people than you currently write for. It's a tiny place compared to Loving Wives and Incest and those folks seem to enjoy more of a vanilla hetero-related sex romp in space. They have their tentacles but those too seem to be non TS/CD tentacles.

Go for it but let them know what they're getting into.

Good hunting!

Those category readers are used to characters of all sorts. Provided your story has the sci and the fi, you'll find more tolerance there than in many other categories - I don't think you'll get slammed at all with a TS lead.

I actually sent SoB a TS-sci fi story to look over and comment on a couple of years ago, about a society where 99% women had been mostly killed-off by a plague, and the surviving women were closely guarded as breeding stock for genetically-pure males, so companies had arisen who would create beautiful TS companions from gay/psychologically transgendered males who wanted to be transformed for men who had the money and didn't want to die alone and celibate.

It ended up being an adventure story, but I couldn't figure out the correct category, and I was unsure about the etiquette of hetero-TS relationships anyway, nor how offensive the TS/TG community might find such a story. My story was called 'Lifemates', the name of the company that would carry out the male-to-TS transformations. I never heard back from him, and I guess he's having the same problem as I did, re. the reception such a story would get wherever it ultimately went.

Hell, the SF crowd doesn't even care if there is sex in the stories. I have a bunch without any sex, never even got a whisper of complaint. I also have some with not all that much SF in them although they are all tied together with a mythical organization which prosecutes time travelers, which the main character in the series does to some extent.

I see no reason why anyone would make a comment or score the story badly with a TG person in the story.

I have written about dolphins from another planet cluing in humans on how to progress so they could develop an FTL drive.

As long as it's mostly sci-fi/fantasy and the TS/CD is just part of the story instead of the main point.

In fact, there's a serial there right now. Doesn't make a big thing of it, it's just of fact of the MC life.

My 'Lifemates' story is split into 2 parts, the first part is mainly about the hetero MC adjusting to and fully accepting the TS companion and relationship he's chosen, and the 2nd part is the adventure part, where the police captain the TS MC used to work for comes looking for her because he and his corrupt allies like to kidnap and sell the good-looking T-Girls to the highest bidders around the world. The world I created is pretty dystopian, and I really had to reach for a way to portray it.

I originally wrote the outline story for a TG couple I knew, but have since lost touch with, Cheryl, the femme, is the spitting image of Gates McFadden, which helps as they're both dyed-in-the-wool Trekkies and she causes a sensation when they go to Trek-Cons and Comicons, they wanted a relatable Sci-Fi story with them as the MC's so I did what I could, but TBH I was never really happy about my take on that whole world, because it's just so far out of my wheelhouse.

Ts/Cd or Romance?

I’m writing a story at the moment about a transsexual/straight man relationship who genuinely love each other and have actually gone through a civil ceremony and live and are known as Mr and Mrs. They are in their mid-twenties and she’s working as a sex worker because she can earn more in an hour than he does in a week. They both have professional qualifications and are working hard so they can, by the time they get into their thirties, have no financial worries because by then they both want to have “proper” jobs.

They would like a family, which is obviously physically impossible, but they would like to initially foster to decide themselves if they are suitable to be parents and then, hopefully, go on to adopt. The intention is to take them through the next ten years. I’d like to put it in Romance but I’m concerned, because the story has a transsexual main character, Romance readers will find it offensive. So do I take the easy way and put it in Ts/Cd?

I have been wondering this myself about my series.

It is the simple story of a young guy who meets a quietly controlling woman and he ends up pleasuring other women.

There is control but no non-consent. A lot BBW's and domination but not really body worship.

It has ended up in BDSM but I don't feel it really is.

I guess it doesn't matter too much.

If you're serious about writing this story then bring yourself up to date with terms. Kinda surprised to hear you refer to transsexual, which is a term dropped over ten years ago. I don't know if romantics will object but trans folk will. You'll find the 'easy way' section titled "transgender/crossdresser".

Please don't post under the Transgender category

You might want to check adoption rules, and custody of children, depending what country this is going to be set. I'm sure you'll do the research

Lol. Where exactly would you find that for a Sci-fi/fantasy setting?
;)

Edit: oops, I see now that you were not referring to the OP.

I think you could safely go either way. For what it's worth, I have a transgender story published in Romance that has done just fine. As I'm sure you know, the romance content is important — and it sounds like that is you intent. To me, the positive of putting it in romance is the opportunity to normalize the relationship to a broader audience. I don't think a content warning is necessary — on mine the tag line is; A Lesbian and Transgender Romance.

On the other hand, I have always found the Trans/CD readers to be very supportive too. I second stickygirl's advice to be sure of your terms and details.

Utilize your tags.

I have come across this problem before. Where I would have a story that was non-consent reluctance, but the two characters we're of different ethnic background so I put it as interracial. This caused me a good bit of grief and then some more when I changed changed it in favor of those that complained. Ultimately, I would just recommend that you pick one, be through in tagging the content of your story, and then if you're still worried leave a note for the readers at the very top to warn them of the content.
