I was wondering, where should a story go if it has some bdsm play but it's just play. That is, the couple in question doesn't have a strong master/slave relationship outside of sex, or even every time. It's just a story about one time they explore the fun you can have with it. I feel like my story would be out of place in the bdsm section, where people are tied down against their will, punished for pleasuring themselves, dribbled with hot wax, etc. I don't object to that, it's just not this story. The boyfriend is just dominating and teasing his girlfriend, who he's tied up. There are also scenes that are completely unrelated to bdsm, they are just the girlfriend masturbating.

Am I missing something obvious as to where this story would fit?

Lynn,

If you think it's bdsm enough to go into bdsm, include a note at the top that it's roleplay bdsm or light bdsm. If you decide to put it in Erotic Couplings, put a the same note at the top that it has light bdsm in it. Just warning your readers.

Was that helpful? :)

Several of my stories have BD/Sm overtones or undertones. Butonly one is posted to that category. The most important theme in the work is what should determine where you post. If the b&D stuff is only a side bar, then select the category you feel refelects the theme of the work. Laurel may change the cat you request, but you can explain your reasoning in the notes section of the submission form.

Thanks, y'all. I think I have a better idea of how to handle this now. *hugs*

Just goes to show, you never quite know what category others will view your story as. This got put in Toys & Masturbation. :D

I recently had a cross-category story "Burying Uncle Hiram's Ghost" with a reference to under-age sex and child-molestation. So I asked Laurel to decide and suggested Romance, Incest, Group Sex, First Time, and EC. My preference was for Romance (first cousins in love can't marry due to a dead uncle's will and state laws) but as I suspected, she went with incest.

There's a pretty sound theory that you go with the category where the story will make the fewest people mad. Some Romance readers might be turned-off and even upset by any type of incest not to mention the references to molestation and under-age sex.

Judging from the story's score (around 4.3) the Incest readers appear to have just been annoyed it didn't have rauchier sex with closer blood relatives.

Most of all, Laurel will do practically anything to keep a story out of the huge EC category.
