What are your writing quirks?

Are there any conditions under which you write best? If so, what are they?

I have to be in absolute silence, or maybe with some wordless music playing. I am too easily distractable. I am also borderline-violent if I am interrupted when writing.

i usually write and do housework at the same time. Write a while, go scrub the bathroom. Come back and write, wash the dishes.

i've not been doing a whole lot of writing lately, so my house is really dirty. :)

I typically smoke my pipe or a cigar, drink coffee, and play original cast recordings of broadway musicals while I write.

usually late at night with a glass of something alcoholic that is good for sipping...

oh. number one: no internet. i disconnect my modem or scratch out ideas on paper away from my computer. also, i write in silence or white noise; i find anything else so distracting.

I should do that. I get too many goddamn IMs while I'm trying to work.

I can write anywhere.

On computer, outside with a notebook watching the kids play in the pool, inside on the couch with a beer, sketching notes on dinner napkins - whatever.

BUT I need quiet and solitude and comfort in which to edit.

Does that make you a writing slut?

Shit, I know she is going to hit me...

It depends what I'm writing. Poetry can hit me anywhere (which is why I keep paper nearby at all times, even in the car). When I'm writing a story, I don't want any interruptions and I usually have to turn my music off.

Same as!! I write (when I feel the inspiration) on my old PC in the back office, no internet connection on that one... and God help anyone who distracts me... unless it's *L* feeling horny and looking for a fuck in which case I make allowance for half hour or so while conducting hands on research :)

I have two ideal settings -

a) I'm in bed with my laptop. It's late at night, I have a spliff on the go and the rest of the world is sleeping.

b) I take a pen and pad of paper out to somewhere really scenic (plenty of beaches around me, and just go for it the old fashioned way.

At the moment I'm trying to be less choosy. I know that once I get into the habit of writing at home during the day, there'll be no stopping me.

Lately, I've been doing well with the headphones on and a playlist of tunes appropriate to the piece I'm writing -- be it angst-y or hopeful or tender or sultry.

I do all my writing at night after my kids are in bed. I turn off anything that has words (television, radio) its the only way I don't get distracted.

I write best when I'm under extreme pressure to get real work done (non-writing professional stuff), then it seems nothing can stop me from putting off the real work to write and post a story. When I have real leisure time, all I can seem to do is develop new and complete stories--in my head.

(I'm really quite prolific when it comes to stories not written: Many, many fully developed concepts, and many more themes or ideas... If only I weren't so lazy.)

I'm growing to respect the old fashioned method that scheherazade employs, and I think I may force myself to (re)learn that lost art.

i dont remember? its been that long though i just started another story...i think i'll have to re-invent my quirkiness
this time, i wont pick my nose after every sentence. i think this might speed things along.

I have to be in a locked 8'x4' walk in closet with 4 1/2 capuchin monkeys listening to death metal at 175 decibels, while I listen to Henry mancini through headphones. There can be no light in the room save for the monitor and the keyboard must be turned backwards and have all the keys switched around. A bowl of raw brussel sprouts and a class of lamp oil are the only sustenance I can have. And the temperature must be -33F.

That's when I write my best stuff.

Or a whole new perspective on hunt and peck.
