Ok, so I decided to be completely silly and run with it. It's all Minsue's fault, she asked, "WTF is a bagpuss?". :p

Bagpuss was indeed a soft furry catpuss. He was the star of a 1970's BBC TV kids' show. And he was marvellous. He stretched, he yawned, sometimes he spoke. He had mice friends, and Magdelain, the rag doll, and a freaky friend called Professor Yaffle, who was a wooden woodpecker; he doubled up as a book end. Bagpuss was owned by Emily (and she loved him), who's father ran a store where everything on sale was basically junk. The mice often mended this junk, singing "we will mend you", then turned it into a boat and rowed away.

I love Bagpuss, I adore Bagpuss. I have a Bagpuss stuffed toy, and Bagpuss keyring, and even a Bagpuss T shirt. Yes, I am sad.

This is he, the object of my affection (or, should that be affliction?)...

Edited, cos I typed "T shit" instead of "T shirt"

I have no opinion per the poll, Lou. I am not a judge of cuteness as I try to avoid anything cute (except my hunnybunny).

But I admire your frankness and the courage of your convictions.

Me? I have a very good likeness of The Evil Queen from Snow White on top of my PC.

Good luck to you, Louloubella.

Bagpuss is definitely kitsch. I'm a student, it's my job to support cultural icons from my childhood with the excuse that they're kitsch.

We have these nostalgic conversation occasionally where we talk about how great Thomas the Tank Engine was and how the Trapdoor was the greatest program ever. People think for a second and then chip in with the name of a program like "Thundercats!" which get a cheer and everyone agreeing just how great that program was.

And you thought being a student was just about the alcohol.

Having said that alcohol and these kind of conversations do often intertwine...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Bananas in Pyjamas.

Why is it that we subject our kids to stupid rolemodels? Don't we want them to mature?

Children's programs can be very, very dangerous for kids' mental health. Just look at Sweden.
25 years ago, we all watched Barbapapa.
Today, 25 years later, we elected Göran Persson into power.

Coincidence?

I think not.

Bagpuss lives!

Bagpuss (the original) lives a few miles away in a Canterbury Museum. Emily still loves him and was featured in the local papers last week.

I knew Bagpuss would get the vote from the student wing.

As for Our Tone, and which kids programme caused us for vote for him, I love Svenska's suggestion. "Transformers, robots in disguise." :D

Lou

P.S. Perdita, thank you my sweet. I need all the luck I can get.

Woohoo! The best news I've heard all day. Thank you King Og, I'm gonna give you a big kiss for that.

I am so pleased to hear that Emily still loves him, because I do, too.

I voted option one, cause hate to see you sad, sweet Lou....

I don't remember any critters like that from my childhood. TV wasn't as universal then as it is now and all I remember are cowboy heroes like Hopalong Cassady. By the time Howdy Doody came along, I was too old for him.

I love bagpuss...he's so cute..I own a talking bagpus....who yawns and says "it's so nice to have a cuddle". Bagpuss is my kind of animal. :) sleepy, cuddly and terribly cute!

And i am with crimson maiden...Thank God it's not that purple dinosaur thing*shudder* why do children like Barney anyway?

Now settle down, children...

I used to hear "Listen with Mother" on the steam radio. My favourite was Larry the Lamb in Toytown.

TV came later with such wonders as "Muffin The Mule" (- is that still allowed or is it beastiality?); The Flowerpot Men (and Weed); and Andy Pandy - stupid little twit.

Speaking of childhood things....

I was flipping through a magazine I subscribe to yesterday and found the next item for my list of birthday or Christmas presents this year...

Did you know the collected episodes of "H. R. Puffnstuff" are now available on DVD? <g>

As much as I've grown to tolerate the big purple dinosaur (I have two children under 10, and live in a daycare), give me a sickly green-yellow one anytime. hehehe

Oggie is rather old you see darling one, and before electricity they powered everything with steam. Steam radios were huge devices with a fire box and boiler, a large brass cylinder sat atop the device, with a huge shining shaft sliding in and out. Sitting proudly on top of the whole issue was the regulator, two brass balls rotating at a fair old speed as they controlled the motion and duration of the sliding shaft.:D  One had major problems with long playing records on early radio shows, often the stoker couldn't keep pace with the amount of coke needed to ensure reliable and longlasting steam pressure. Often the regulator balls would slow to a stop and the shaft remain motionless, or just slide out slowly as all power was released.

Oh sorry

Forgot what the thread was about for a minute there, Umm. Bagpuss, I used to use that as a password on my old PC, (true).

Not that I really got into Bagpuss, got into a few bags with big puss's but that's another story:D

I do love the old favourites though, I remember being fascinated by shows like Flowerpot men, could never suss how the freek they understood each other, Flobberdob Weeeed.

My fave had to be Magic roundabout though, unbeatable that one for sexual innuendo on a kids prog. Of course Capt Pugwash wasn't far behind, "Come here Seaman Staines".

Sounds awfully queer to me.

I kept thinking you were putting me on about the steam radio. I cannot recall ever hearing of such. Just how old is Ogg?

your Perdita

Never saw Bagpuss, but as an ardent supporter of anything cute I voted that way :)

Sides, Lou lou has impeccable taste :)

4,000 years old, or so he claims. I wanna see proof. ;)

Oh, and by the way, The Flowerpot Men were called Bill and Ben. They didn't speak, not coherently, anyway, but Weed said, "Flobbadobbaweeeeeeeeeeeeeed!"

It's very cultured stuff. :D

Hehehe! And, let's not forget "Master Bates". Apparently Captain Pugwash got banned, because of the sexual innuendo in the stories. Noddy went through a dodgy period, too, because he and Big Ears often shared a bed, but only to sleep in. They were bestest pals. :D

Lou

P.S. I LOVED The Magic Roundabout. All as high as kites, but good stuff. Been made into a feature film now, apparently.
