It’s a Wonderful Life
1946 Frank Capra. An American “Christmas Carol’ perhaps.
Joyeux Noël

Bladerunner

Bladerunner
1982 Ridley Scott
The scene with the fluttering dove and the ‘I have seen things you have never dreamed of’ speech still sends tremors.
Un aperçu du futur

The Shining

The Shining
1980 Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King and Mr Nicholson – Perfect!
The scene on the stairs wih the baseball bat is pure Nicholson
Jack est le principal

Oh god..... It's a Wonderful Life, the eternal Christmas classic.

But I would have to agree with you on that one.

There is one other that I like.... for as long as I could remember I heard all about Casablanca but never saw it.... I saw it recently and see what all the appeal with it was.

Classic movies

There are so many of them that I would put here but the two that come to mind first are:

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"
"The Dirty Dozen"

I love these movies!!

Casablanca ah:) What were the last words? 'This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship', perhaps? I can not remember. They filmed three endings and none of the actors knew how it was going to end, imagine that.

If it is your favorite or one of them, post a still photograph - :)

I might be stepping on your toes Nessus but here are a few I consider classics.

brazil
drugstore cowboy
manchurian candidate
apocalypse now
pi
seven samurai
ran
yojimbo
the thin red line
dog day afternoon
crouching tiger, hidden dragon (instant classic)
the plague dogs
rushmore

I may have a different take on a classic, but my list would include
  • Harold and Maude
  • Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail
  • The Princess Bride

You have hit some which I love. 'Brazil' an underatted classic - superb
Rushmore - that will be an eternal classic when the world catches up

I have forgotten so many movies.

Princess Bride - wonderful

Same minds, similar gutters...

Looks like Princess Bride was on our collective mind, Nessus.

Is being a "classic" in the same realm as "antique"? Is there some time period that has to elapse?

A few of my favorites:

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Breaker Morant
Carlito's Way
Good Fellas
Dead Calm
Shawshank Redemption

Lovers on the pont neuf (french)
Nikiti

Tie me up, tie me down(Spanish)

All stars (Dutch)
Bastards and Bridesmaids

Oh yeah, and some english films too

I love these movies!!

It shows my age, but old blue eyes with his salad dressing still does it for me...

The Godfather
American Graffiti
Psycho (and anything else from Hitchcock)
Singin in the Rain
Young Frankenstein
Casablanca
Gone With the Wind

that's all i can think of right now

The Star Wars Trilogy,("Empire," in itself is a classic.) DEFINETELY one of the biggest revelations in movie history, in my opinion, anyhow. "Luke, I am your Father."

oh definitely! any movie that could make the way someone breaths be THAT popular has GOT to be a classic!
willing and unsure has a good list too...

Is that sarcasm I sense, GG? I just LOVE that movie. Here's more to add to my list

America Beauty
The Exorict
Holloween
Dracula(1931)
Frankenstein(1931)

Seeings as Holloween just passed, those were fresh in my head.

Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid

Think you used enough dynamite Butch?

There aren't any rules in a knife fight.

Shit, the fall will probably kill ya.

Well, we tried going straight.

They already have their hands in the air.

You call that cover?
You call that running?

Hollywood is intent on making stories with happy endings, and fond of those which set up a reasonable probability for a sequel. Neither was true in this case, but it is clearly one of the all-time classics (Yes, Power, I noticed... and jinny it goes way beyond his eyes.) There are a few others I might list, but this one so far out-paces the others I leave it unadorned.

Who are those guys?
