I'm watching it with mine these days and I was just wondering.

:rose:

What's an appropriate age to censor what our kids watch? Personally, I wouldn't. It sends totally the wrong lesson about the media, authority, and free speech.

Well I would. I did. I had my kids watch only the age and content appropriate shows I would allow them when they were young.

However, as they got older, they were exposed to more and more through friends or school.

At that point, I began sitting down and discussing the shows with them. What I liked and didn't like about them and why.

At this age, (teen years) I don't worry. I'm sure they have good values and common sense in place.

I think watching this particular show with my girl is a sort of show of solidarity and acceptance.

Hi FF,

You know I am not a parent but the best I can say is that it is a case by case bases. Some kids are just like whatever two moms...some ask more questions. hard to say what is appropriate. The sex part of the show would be my concern.

Yes, a lot of people parents or not would be concerned with the sex scenes on the show I think.

Personally, I've never understood why people get so uptight about sex but are so cool with violence in media.

I've been most uncomfortable with the het sex on the show because this is supposed to be a lesbian show. I'm not sure why they included it. Perhaps to show how much less exciting and cutting edge it looks? LOL.

Anyway, it's certainly not porn. There isn't any more sex shown on it than in a R rated film, quite a bit less really or any other pay channel show. Pay channels seem to think if they don't show some boobies once per epi they haven't done their job.

:rose:

I agree that it's a case-by-case basis thing, but I also agree that the sex is pretty explicit on that show! I'm not sure it's appropriate for an 11-year-old. A 15-year-old, definitely fine...they see that stuff anyway. Anywhere in between and I'd say a parental discussion would go well with the viewing.

I am nost sure my girl is only 3 so I have a long way to go yet. I dont think I will be letting her watch anything at 11years old maybe around the 14-15year mark even then I dont think I would be happy she my little girl and I want to protect her from the evil that is man (come on you all know what I am talking about).

I understand. I felt the same way when my girl was little, when my boy was too.

:rose:

im got 3 boys aswell and I know this will sound worng but I am more worried about my little girl than I am the boys with regards to this but I dont think I am the only one that protects the girls more than the boys. Dont get me wrong I am still worried about me boys but either way I am not going ot let any of them see that kinda thing until they are 14-15years.

Yes, I agree this is something else we do in our society that is wrong, treat children and what we see as the threats to them, differently.

Clearly boys too can be molested, abused, get diseases and be raped. The only difference is that they can't get pregnant. They can get someone pregnant though and that carries it own risk.

The fact that many of use see our girls as who we need to protect more while encouraging our boys to "sow wild oats" is a very wrong thing in our society.

I've always treated my kids exactly the same in sexual matters. I told them about sex at the same age. I told them that it was something they would want to do. I told them and showed them how to use a condom.

In fact, my boy the other day said, why do they call it "the birds and the bees? Shouldn't it be the condom and the banana?" LOL.

OMG they say the best things ever lol. Yeah I am at this point glad that my kids have not come to that age where I have to have the talk.

It does upset me that we are having now like an outbreak of teenage mums and dads and soon enough I am sure of it that there kids will have kids and make them grand parents by the time they 23 (which I could be rong in this but as I seem to recall the youngest mother only 11 years old this could very well be the case)

And yeah I do agree that in this day an age it is wrong to promote the boys to have as much fun as they can while protecting the girls but on the other flip side it seems today that also alot of people don't seem to care what there children do they have the "outta sight outta mind" approach which is in my view just being damm lazy towards there child's up bringing.

I don't feel that way. My son's last gf's mom has seven kids, one of them a brand new baby. I kept asking our friends, does this girl have anything she wants to do with her life? Please tell me she doesn't want to get married and have kids!

I have to say my girl being gay has (right or wrong) made me feel more secure, that she won't be getting pregnant any time soon.

I think both sexes should explore but use barrier method disease and birth control. I always the worst thing that could happen is not a baby but a disease that could kill you.

I was the result of a teen pregnancy myself.

Dont get me wrong I was also due to a teen pregnancy but my mother was 19 and married to my father for 1 year. The problem I have is with children as young as 11 years old having babies when in effect they are still babies themselves.

We as parents need to ensure that our child know what they are doing and that they know how to do it safely or not at all, know I now that we cant follow are kids around all day and am not saying that we should but we have to do something to stop are babies from having babies at the age of 11 years old.

Yes, that's true.

I'm finding out as a parent that we can only do so much. We can provide the tools, supervision and information that can best help them make good choices BUT then they still have to make their own choices and mistakes.

I don't have to worry about 11 year old pregnancies with mine, thank goodness. They are 17 and 15 but even when 11 I didn't worry about that because I did know where they were.

:rose:

I do have some way to go before my kids are 11years old (well 4 years for my oldest boy and 8 years for my girl) I can only hope they grow up to respect themselfs enough to be safe and if they do that then I have done my job as parent within that area.

So no-one else is worried about the political consequences of teaching children that censorship is natural, sex is dangerous, and some things shouldn't be seen?

I'm not worried about the political consequences of teaching kids that good parents will try to protect them from certain things and images when they are young. Call it censorship if you wish. I have no problem with censorship of this particular application.

I am worried that kids will get the idea that sex is wrong, dirty and makes you evil if you are not in love or married. That fucked me up pretty bad for a while.

However, sex is dangerous. How I wish it weren't and we could all have "free sex without consequence." Just imagine such a wonderful world?

Sadly, that is NOT the world we live in. Let's get real here. That's why kids need to learn, when age appropriate, the best safety measures we have for sex. Those measures need to be be made available to them as well.

I see no point in doing the ostrich, head in the sand, "just say no thing."

Some things shouldn't been seen. I don't want to see them. You don't want to see them but that has nothing to do with The L Word IMO. I'm thinking more along the lines of executions and torture.

Happily, each parent can decide what is and is not appropriate for their kids themselves and no opinion anyone else has holds any weight unless legislation is passed to impinge on parental rights.

I agree

Somethings children should just not see until they are old enough to understand what it is that they are seeing or even reading.

Nimbikarana there is a reason that the powers that be set age limits for sex, films with extreme violence, books with adult material. Because there minds are just not ready for that information.

I will never tell my children sex is wrong or but I will make sure that they are aware of what they doing, how to be safe and stay safe.

At the end of the day every parent teaches there child in a different way but more often than not they reach the same goals which is not to put a child down nor to hinder the child's development but to ensure that the child see the things that they are ready to see and can fully understand the actions of what are seeing.
